Picked up the new CityX last Saturday. Got my 500 break-in miles completed yesterday. What a sweet ride! Very pleased with the whole ownership experience so far. Bought it at HD/Buell of Glendale CA. 1st class dealership all the way. Everybody was way nice and I got a great deal, $9600 OTD. Ernie Snair was my salesman. I told him what I thought was a fair price to pay and he beat it by $80. Not bad!

Two questions:
I got my race kit from DaveS, fantastic service there by the way, thank you. As everyone knows the muffler is silver, it's the painted one not polished. I would like it black to look like stock. Is Jet Hot coating the way to go or some other ceramic based coating? I think paint is out, not durable enough.

Secondly, what filler things are available for the pasta strainer? I ride a bike everyday and I don't need a soaked back when it rains. A thin black plastic insert to block the holes would be great. I'm not sure if there are CF ones out there or maybe just inexpensive plastic replacements that look OK or what.

Ej = Just sand it lightly and coat it with some high temp flat auto paint. You can get the stuff at almost any auto parts store.
As far as the pasta strainer; have you tried it in the rain yet? From what my physics knowledge tells me, the air flow around you and the bike should keep the spray from the tire away from your bod.

I have thought about paint. Easy to touch up and can be done anytime but I've never had real good luck with durability over the long haul. I thought a coating would hold up like the Buell factory finish.
Yes, I have ridden through the wet and yes my back got wet and filthy dirty. All I really need is some thin black plastic sheet. It could be epoxied into the recess underneath and problem solved. Sounds too easy dosen't it?

Ejiii...Al at www.americansportbike.com has CF insert for the strainer. My Drummer is jet coated and the finish is great. I working on some matching headers as we speak. You won't be disappointed.

Which Jet Coat finish did you get? How much was it?
I knew I saw that CF strainer insert. Thanks for the american sportbike direction.

For the header and exhaust, check out www. classiccoatings.com. They offer ceramic coating services at reasonable rates with real fast turn around times. FYI...they did all of the blue Buell headers that came on the X1 white lightning a few years back.

Looks like classic coatings only wants about $40 to coat a muffler. That's a way good price. A local place wants 3x's that and I might guess Jet Hot is about the same.

Nope, Jet-hot runs around 160 bucks for both a header and pipe. Although I am getting the more expensive blue coating on my header and my pipe is being coated sterling silver. So you could guess the price range for what you want could be right around $150. The turn around time is about a week. So I should receive my stuff next thursday. I'll let you know how it turns out. I'll also post some pics.

Cool. Pics will be great. My local outfit wanted $150 as a minimum charge. I wonder what you get for $40 from classic.

I painted my silver XB9R Buell race muffler with BBQ Black spray paint before install (after sanding and solvent wash) and with over 10,000 miles it looks like the day I painted it. Less than 10 bucks and not a lot of time. I especially like the "Hey man, you should put on the Race Kit it will give you more power" comments.

When I ride in the goo, quite a bit of stuff does come up through the pasta strainer (evidenced by the mess on both sides of it) but who knows how much of the stuff on my back came from there. I do get a lot more back there then I did with the cyclone.

Of course with the cyclone, it was tranny oil from a leaking crank seal, with the XB it's just road grime : )

Congrats on the bike EJ! That CityX is an extremely sweet ride. I picked up my 12R on Saturday as well. Thought I was doing good at 80 miles. Glad to hear your out of break-in. My mods started with pucks and sliders.

Good luck and keep at least one rubber on the ground at all times ; )

Thanks for the congrats. The dealer I took delivery from is at the base of the foothills here in So. Cal. I rolled out of the dealer and right up Angeles Crest Hwy (Hwy 2 out of La Canada if you look at a map). That was a 200mi day right out of the gate! I only live 3mi from work but I have a 25mi loop through a place called Palos Verdes I can take to and from the office so I can rack up some miles pretty quick. The whole break-in was either canyon twisties or urban drive cycle stuff, the best for break-in.
It has been raining here so I haven't had a chance to go out and really "use" the bike yet. The weather will be good to go by Monday.

I see you live in Pt. Pleasant. I have a sister that lives there on Atlantic Ave. We grew up in Rutherford. I have been in CA for 20+ years now, work brought me here. At one time I was an MC tech at Freehold Cycle Sales and Cooper's Cycle Ranch (Hamilton Square) all around 1980. I was in Pt. Pleasant this past August. Took the family for vaca. It was beautiful!
