just got a new sb12s installed a d&d muffler sounds great. My problem is I'm not sure about the mounting.I removed the front band and hanger but the hole in the muffler tab is larger than the exsisting bolt also there is a gap between the tap and the mounting point on the engine. Is something missing or did I install incorrectly.thanks for the info.

You have got to make sure the slip joint is as far up as it will go, try wiggling them some more with the rear band off completely!! I had to do the same thing, but once it wiggled all the way up, tthe hole lined up perfectly!! You have to leave the rear mount completely off until you have the hole lined up.

THEN, install the forward bolt ONLY hand tight, then instal the rear clamp so you can still wiggle around the whole can. Now here is something you must do, tighten the pipe clamp completely tight (the one that clamps the header to the pipe), then loosen it up again. Get the mounts just snug tight, IE rear band clamp, then snug (only snug) the front bolt, then tighten completely the rear clamp, then finish tightening the front mount bolt completely, then tighten the pipe clamp completely.

Take bike for a decent length ride, to heat cycle the pipes a few times, and then go over everything again, ONLY to make sure nothing came loose. DONT overtighten anything, you dont want to crush or strip anything!!

Enjoy, as I know you will, they sound great!! LOVE MINE!!

Is a race ECM required w/ the D&D pipe? Does this void factory warranty? I just bought my first bike (2005 XB12R) and love it! I just need a little more sound. Well, a lot more sound. Thanks

Well RMP, that depends. Cool dealers will "look the other way" when it comes to simple bolt ons. TECHNICALLY, yes it does void the warranty. But most service departments say as long as you dont go "in" the motor, they will do what they can to help you.

Hope you enjoy your purchase, and yes, the D&D will give you more sound, LOTS MORE!! I run mine with a stock ecm and the Techlusion TFI unit, runs EXCELLENT, and is adjustable for other mods, unlike the race ECM.

Have fun, and ride!!

Thanks for the feedback. I am a new rider and mostly everything is Greek to me right now, but pipes I can understand. The D&D & Drummer seem to be highly recommended. And as much as I want the sound, I wouldn't want anything to put a new, sound motor in jeopardy. I read about the Techlusion TFI and it seems pretty complex. Anyways, Thanks again. Rob

RMP

I was told the same by my local tech, "Race ECM not nec." but a techlusion or a powercommander with the d&d are a good way to go as well as opening up the airbox. I'm having the powercommander installed as well as the race kit airfilter w/the d&d exhaust and will be on the dyno later this coming week. I would also like to filet my airbox does anyone have pics of there airboxes to show (that hav either been swissed or cut for mor air flow)?

Bamabiker. The D&D comes with a new bolt and fender washers to install that front hanger. I had the same problem, scratching my head. I then went back through the packaging and found a little package that was with the clamp. I didn't see it in the excitement of ripping everything out!

Bama

Mobil 1 75-90 in the the gearbox, remember, this is an american sport bike, not import. The gearbox is seperate from the engine lubrication system.

Bar end mirrors are 3rd Eye from the bicycle shop. It take a few rides to get used to where to look, but the field of view is greater, as I can see completely around the rear of the bike. And being light as they are, they dont shake too much.

Glad to help

Not sure if it's been mentioned...
The D&D comes with one rear clamp. My personal opinion is that it should have two. I have two on the shop bike, and feel a lot more secure knowing that the muffler isn't going anywhere should one clamp fail. T-Bolt clamp failures are far from unheard of, on ANY muffler. See here

I had the same problem with my d&d. There was a gap so I machined a new aluminum spacer to replace the stock one. I tried to push it on harder but it would move anymore. The new spacer did the trick.

I just got mine installed today, I've been having health issues lately so I didn't want to deal with the headache. The Dealership charged me for 1.8hrs of labor. Sound about right? they said it was a pain, I think it was their first D&D install on a XB.

My first bike, yet I'm very mechanically inclined, and I found it a piece of cake. Went together in a snap. Love when that happens. Ask me about installing long tube headers on a 1996 Mustang GT with a stock K-member left in place!! Lots of foul language, contorted body parts, and blind luck! Never do that again!!

I stock the clamps, see here For the time being, I'm just getting them from D&D, so the price is a bit high. I need to get them from the manufacturer to take a few bucks off.

Al,
You might try "Long Beach Hose and Couplings", as a source.

1501 Santa Fe Ave., Long Beach, Ca. (562)901-2907

Let me say,I'm not connected to them in any way.

They are kinda like a specialty hardware store, in the industrial part of West LB. They mostly cater to the port and industrial part of town and have tons of heavy duty stuff.

I know they have T-bolts, that's where I found replacements for the ones that held on my SuperTrapps on my cafe Sportster, for about one third of what SuperTrapp wanted, and I didn't have to wait for them, they had a wide range of sizes in stock. Stainless of course.

Anyway, just a heads-up.

Keith,
I can't blame the muffler failure on broken T-bolts. That was an old recalled race can that I should have known better than to leave without an emergency catch strap. My bad. Though I have broken my share of T-bolts. That race exhaust would eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I used Al's advice and picked some up from the local NAPA dealer. They were about $2.00 per and they had to order the ones I wanted. I had them the next day. If you're in a bind a typical, meaning correct size, AutoZone $.99 piece works perfectly -- looks like crap, but you can't see it once you're mounted up. :-) Later.

What gives..... I just got my D&D today. I am in the middle of the install and am having the same front bolt issue. Some of you mention a bolt and washer and a band clamp for the rear mount that came with the pipe. Mine did not have either. There was a clamp for the muffler to connect to the header and the muffler itself, nothing else.

Did D&D leave these out of the box? I am going to go see what I can come up with in the garage, but you would think for the price of the D&D the mounting hardware would be there.

cdrlmr I had the same problem look at the post by rr eater it worked for me. I found a washer in my garage that would work. I called D&D tech line but that was a waste of time.Find a washer that fits and install per rr eater.

Yeah, I put a washer on mine. I picked it up at Home Depot. It loosed pretty quick though. I torqued the crap out of it after it came loose and it hasn't budged since. That was probably about 6,000 miles ago.

I'm lost. I got my D&D from Daves two weeks ago, and it had the large clamp, A new front nut and bolt with two Fender washers(Large diameter, small inner diameter). Worked perfect. I didn't find it first. I was pissed that the original front bolt didn't work since there was not enough washers. I went back and searched through the bubble wrap, and low and behold, where the clamp was, under the tape was the new nut and bolt setup. Snugged right up, no problem with any fit.

CDR

Double check all the packing, as I like newxb9er, found it stashed in the bubble wrap. Follow what I put up for installation hints, and you will have no problems. I am NOT speaking for DaveS, but you might want to contact him IF you cannot find the hardware, and are having trouble getting in contact with D&D!! Just an Idea!!

I was tearing apart the bike to permanently stow the TFI unit away, and double checked the hardware on everything. Found the rear clamp a tad loose, so check everything the first couple times you ride guys!!

I have already been in contact with Dave. I will double check the bubble wrap when I get home from work today. Dave already stated he would take care of it if I do not find it. This is why everyone goes to Dave.... He takes care of his customers.
Thanks Dave

My brother and I just installed the D&D on his '05 12R. Not a big deal at all. Took under an hour. The two most time consuming steps were getting that rear clamp on and pulling the cable for the servo out.

I just received the bolt and clamp from Dave. Thanks for all your help Dave. I feel much better with this clamp than the stock ones that just didn't get tight. The new clamp also looks a LOT stronger.
Thanks again Dave
