I have never used fiber glass in my life. I also think that the seat cowling for the XB Lightning is a sweet piece of body work. I don't have the money to cough up $189 for it though. I bought the fiber glass materials for around $30. I'm now wondering what I should make a mold out of. I was thinking about buying a block of styrofoam and shaping it to the seat cowl shape. Then I would cover it in bondo. After that I would lay down the fiberglass ontop of that. If anybody has any tips or experience please let me know. | ||

Plaster bandage works well for mold making if you have access to a medical supply store. You can just lay it right on the seat. Put down some plastic wrap first. Put some release agent in the inside of the mold (silicon spray) and lay down your glass/cf. pop out when cured and vola...rear cowling for seat | ||

How would I work some shapes into that if I didn't want just a plain flat seat cowling. I pretty much want to replicate the Iron Machine seat cowling from www.ironmachine.com. Thanks for anymore help in advance. (Message edited by Mitch_XB9S on February 10, 2005) | ||

Buy a sheet of metal, I like brass and copper, and bend it in the radius you want. Polish the inside of it. Wax it with car wax untile you have a fine layer and leave the wax on, that is your release agent. Lay your part into this female mold. You can wet the fabric before or after you put it in the mold, pros and cons either way. You should not need a male mold, no one will see the underside right? After it has set up saw, file, sand the edges of your piece to finish them off. Leave a bit of "extra" material on the edges so you have some to remove and make it look pretty. When you are done you might just wish you bought a sea cowling. | ||

If you need to use tape at any point while waiting for the resin to dry use masking tape. It usually(99% of the time) does not stick to the resin. | ||

Oh I forgot you can not use just any foam, the stuff we use comes in either blue or pink. Most other foams melt I am sorry I can not think of what its called right now, but I am sure somebody else on this board knows what I am talking about. | ||

The blue and pink foams are extrude polystyrene. Much the same resin as expanded polystyrene, it's just not made up of small beads. The extruded form would shape better with hand tools. | ||
