Ok I read through nearly all of the posts on here about polishing/waxing our bikes, and I'm still stumped.

I'm in the process of swapping airboxes with Letzfoto (my blue for his black) and he graciously sent me his black first, so I went to polish up last night and slap it on my bike.

The black airbox has some of the normal light scratches and scuffs in it. I started with what I had read on here was supposed to work:
-Novus 2, Novus 1 then Harley Glaze & sealer.

Didn't work. Novus 2 puts in fine scratches & the HD glaze looks hazy under bright light. IF you turn the plastic so the light isn't hitting it directly it is very glossy and looks great. But under harsh light you can see hazziness & lots of fine scratches.

So I tried Mother's carnuba wax. No good. still hazy.

Tried Meguirs Scratch X, which I have had great success with on other plastics, but didn't really do anything on this bodywork.

I tried Harley spray gloss, better gloss, but still hazy.

Then I tried Plexxus-MUCH better, got rid of haziness, and the really really fine scratches, but the normal fine scratches are still there.

Tried S100 Spray Detail & wax...looks good-pretty much the same as the Plexxus.

All of these products were used w/either clean or brand new microfiber cloths.

So here are my questions:
1-Is there anything that will remove all scratches on black?

2-Why is Novus scratching and why is HD glaze making the plastic hazy?!?!?!?!?!

I'm almost at the point where I throw up my arms and admit defeat. I've already tried about a dozen different products...only I can think to try is the Harley swirl & scratch remover that is recommended in my owner's manual...

And again the bike looks GREAT from 10 feet away-5 feet you can start to see scratches in sunlight, 10 inches and you can see EVERYTHING! I know black is a pain, and a lot of work, and I'm willing to do the work, but NOTHING is WORKING!!!

TIA!

later ya'll,
Nick

You have to use a dry cloth to wipe off the Harley Glaze once it's dried. Also, just use Novus 2 and HD glaze.

Also, use a soft lint free cloth.

Stop using so many products. From what i understand the plastic is not painted. That is why it scratches so easily. If you keep using products intended for paint you will only make it worse. If you want to save time take it to a body shop and get it painted. It will look great and hold up a lot better

Thats the procedure I used and recommended, but that was for the 9SX clear cover. I think that is a different material then the Surlyn. So no promises that the procedure transfers in the first place.

I had pretty heavy damage, and started with Novus 3, then Novus 2, then the Harley Sealer Glaze. It took what seems like forever at the time (though in reality is not that bad), but the result was just about a mirror finish (if I go at it long enough).

The 9sx stuff seems to scratch a lot easier then the Surlyn though, I think it is a lot softer, so I don't know if it will react the same or not.

It did make a difference to be careful about following the instructions about putting it on wet, rubbing until dry, clean cloth and buff dry stuff off. I just did what the bottles said.

I use the swirl and scratch remover and love it. Then again, I'm a Marine and am used to spit shining my boots : ). Anyway, the formula has tiny abrasives that start big and as they work, wear smaller and smaller. If you just keep rubbing, the scratches will get smaller and smaller till it's just hazy. Had the Harley Glaze and Voila! All I use is the Harley products. For the price payed, you get more product...

Hmm-well Reep following the directions EXACTLY did make a difference-at least with the Harley glaze. Got my rag wet, wiped it on and then wandered off for a good 10 minutes (hard to Fr&*^&%$ dry when it's 100% humidity out...) came back and the stuff wiped off no problem, no haziness. But then again it really didn't do . Made it a little more shiney, but anyway...

Hkwan-That stuff looks pretty fricken wyked! It's is EXPENSIVE though, but what the hey, bikes are small...it just won't get used on the truck is all. The article was great though-you can see in the pictures that the stuff really works, and works pretty darn well...

Reep-I think this spider & glare polish is a good candidate for the "Dump gas on the airbox and see if it F*cks it up" test. Only prob is the two of them together is $65 + shipping. I'll call them and see if their shizzle is ok for our plastics. If I end up buyin some I'll mail you a bit.

later,
Nick

I've got swirl marks starting on the speedo/tach plastic, I guess from wiping the dust off.

Great! I have the sacrificial cover, and am willing to put anything on it to see if it works. Maybe the manufacturer will give you a small sample for testing, describe the particular problem we are trying to solve and see if they will give us some to try (it would not take much at all).
