I want to get my engine casings polished.
i.e.the primary cover and cam cover.
I need to remove the casings to polish them.
I was going to get the dealer to do this as the bike i under warranty.
However according to the dealer to remove the cam cover you have to take the tension off the cams i.e.remove the top of the engine.
So to do this they said you would have to drop the engine(rotate it)so cost me a fortune.
The question is who has had the cam cover off?
And if so how did you do it?
Can you perhaps turn over the engine to a specific point where there is no tension on the cams?

Any help as always is appreciated.

there's always tension on the cam's

just drop the engine, and polish the front rocker as well ; )

Use a hand held setup for the polishing and do the camcover in place. Get thick double sided tape and tape off the block to act as a buffer and shield.

You can pull the cam cover without popping off the rocker boxes, it's putting it back that is an issue.

I heard here, and my dealer tech confirmed it, that (at least on the tuber) it *is* possible to put the cams back together without taking off the rocker box covers, if you rotate the right pats to the righ places at the right times (being careful that the indexes all then line back up).

When I had mine, apart and in hand, and looked at it trying to figure out how exactly this can be done, and looking where I would have to pry and what I would have to pry on, I just pulled the rocker box covers.

the least effort You have to take as I can see is:

rotate the crank to one (I would prefer the rear one) cylinder´s compression TDC (both valves are closed - almost none tension on the two cams that belong to the cylinder). Open the rocker cover of the other cylinder (yes, You probably need to tilt the engine) and remove the lower rocker box part that rests the rocker arms thereby releasing the cams. Don´t forget to remove the cam position sensor and cup. Otherwise You will pull at least the front intake cam with the cam cover. While removing the cam cover be sure that NO cam drops out. If a cam drops You need to open the other rocker box as well and reinstall everything according to the service manual.
If it was my job I would open both rocker covers according to the book. It might make things easier.

If I were you, I would buy a new set of covers and polish them (one for each side of the bike). I would then pull out the manual and replace everything at one time. You could then either sell your original covers as is or polish them and sell them for a profit on Ebay.
