Ok I'm sick of tryin' to read the pathetic dipstick on my XB9SL! Couldn't they have come up with something a bit better? Talk about cheap and NOT user friendly! Leads me to this:
Anyone using the Ironmachine replacement or the one from Banke Performance, or ???(NO shrinkwrap or cutoff "upgrades"; ). I guess I'm gonna plunk down the $$$ for something better, but want some opinions first from the board.
TIA

I got mine from Al @ American Sport Bike. It's a billet cap with a brass dip stick, easier to read ,threads in and out better than that cheap plastic thing, and it looks way cooler.

Nothing like a $50 dipstick:-)

However, there are a couple of ways to do it a bit more economically.
Here is my shrink tube fix: cost: about .10¢ per, using Napa # 784653 shrink tubedipstick
Another, even easier to read method is to use a ice cream pop stick: just stick it in the hole, and then hold it up the stock dipstick to check oil level.
Then dispose of in an environmentally sensitive manner.

I broke and got the one from Al. I haven't gotten it yet, but he told me it's on a pivot so it always hangs straight.

Hey Jon, got one question on using the shrink wrap method - would the material of the shrink wrap cause the oil to slide down quicker (right after it leaves the oil bath) and cause a lower oil level reading than what you can get off of the stock dip stick?

I have a guy making a prototype for me right now.
Should have something next week or so.

Henry,
No, that doesn't happen.
However, the ridges on the Buell dipstick, intended to add legibility have the opposite effect.
Thus the "popsicle stick " approach. No doubt where the level is on one of those babies. Just make sure you eat the ice cream first:-).
By the way, the shrink tube has been in there for about 5000 miles now, and looks exactly like the day it was first installed.

So DaveS,
I am to believe you have one(dipstick replacement) in the works? Any Idea when it'll be done and the $$$ for one? Should I cancel the one I'm waiting for?
Let me/us know!
TIA

I just got the quote from the guy.
I have not seen what he has come up with but it looks like I'll need to order 50 of them to get a decent price.
I would be able to retail them for 49.95 and give the usual Badweb discount of 10%.
This would bring them down to 44.96

How many of you would be interested?
I do not want to be sitting on 49 of them!(this would be after I buy one for my demo)

Dave, if it is a quality part, and it looks nice, I would take one. If he could get you a pic, that would be great.

I've got the American Sportbike dipstick and only had to score some level markings on the brass stick to make it perfect.

The DS from American Sport Bike is very nice looking and functional. I have had one for almost two years now.

Side line question here - how many of you are seeing your oil level ALWAYS at the lower marking even though you might have filled the oil to the middle level of the marks?

My level stay solidly at the lower mark, should I be concerned?
