This topic has been covered before, BUT...

I just wanted to let everyone know that as I was removing my clutch lever/cable, I noticed that there was only 3 strands of the cable left attached to the small end piece that secures the cable to the clutch lever.

My bike has just over 8,000 miles.

BEWARE...

It's worth a quick look.

I had to drive a KZ1000 300 miles home with no clutch cable and a (luckily light) passenger on the back. Luckily it was in Montana and Idaho, not too many stops necessary. Anyone know how the Buell does with clutchless shifts?

"Anyone know how the Buell does with clutchless shifts?"

It does pretty good; sometimes it wants to shift back into third when I shift to fourth though.

I've down shifted without the clutch by accident before. Did fine.

At about 10,000 miles my clutch cable snapped at the exact same point. I pulled in the clutch and right at the clutch connector it looked as though the cable frayed all the way through. I noticed that when I fixed it the clutch pull was much easier, so maybe the factory sets them up to bind in some way. I don't know, its weird though.

I up shift all the time with no clutch, but you have to be going fast and let off the gas for half a sec to unload the motor and tranny

Sounds like you don't need the clutch cable Dago. Just get the bike rolling with the starter motor and shift away. I'd probably leave it off to save weight, in fact I'll remove mine tomorrow.
Seriously, it's good to hear that you can shift both ways if you have to. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Sigh, guess I should check my clutch cable. I have 3500 miles on it now.

My Laverda eats 1 cable per year. To get it going I just start the engine in neutral then get it rolling and pop it into gear. Way easier on the starter motor!

Please don't intentionally down-shift without the clutch. That is a really extremely brutal thing to do to your drivetrain.

If you hit it right with a momentary cut of throttle, I'd say even quicker than a half second, clutchless upshifting can be very smooth and safe. It's what virtually all road-racers do. Of course most of them have the little ignition cutout switches on their shift linkage, so they don't even need to cut the throttle. They leave it wide open and simply upshift. The little switch performs the momentary shutting down of the engine so that the revs drop appropriately.
