What type of steel are brake rotors made from?
I have access to a machine shop and would rather laser cut my own sawblade rotor than pay 150+ for one.

How will you keep it perfectly flat? Answer... you most likely won't. Maybe at first it will be flat when you pull it off the grinder, but as soon as you put some heat to it and the residual stresses start to relieve... warp city.

To ensure a good quality non-warping rotor is not a trivial matter, which is why they are not cheap.

A perfectly flat slab of the right kind of steel?
Then have the laser guy cut it out.

They are probably heat tempered. Only a guess.

Alex,

What I'm trying to communicate is that if/when your perfectly flat laser cut home-made rotor heats significantly during use, as brake rotors are want to do, it will very likely warp.

However, if it is the rear brake rotor and not the front, you may be okay. The smaller diameter makes the issue of warpage less severe.

I cannot say what the alloy of stainless steel used is.

It will be the rear rotor.
I was thinking about maybe Carbon steel or maybe Tool steel.
Something REALLY hard but not brittle.
I do have occasional access to Armor Plate I wonder if that would work.

I caught that yesterday, but thought I was just being paranoid... Glad it's not just the voices in my head...
