Ok I'm taking my header off and i'm going through the shock, fan and o2 sensor to get to it. I'm clueless on the appropriate way to undo my shock in order to get to my fan. Any help will be greatly appreciated. My service manual is in the mail somewhere and i cant do anything until i figure out how to undo the shock. Thanks in advance.

Without meaning to offend you if you don't know I wouldn't touch it.
I want to get my exhaust ceramic coated and although I am a competent mechanic I am thinking of getting the shop to do it as it is under warranty.
It's up to you but if you are unsure how to remove the shock I would leave it.

Problem is i cant leave it. I'm determined to get my headers off. Other people have done. I'll get my shock off I just want an experts advice, that has already done it. I'm sorry if this sounds a bit rough.

Wait for the book. Read it many time through on the section you plan to work in. (When I say read it I mean it. Read the book.)

Then go to work if and I repeat, only if you are sure about what your doing. If not, get someone to help you that does know. I've gone down the road of getting into a project where I had no clue what I was doing. I turned a 30 minute thing into a 3 hour one. I got through it but it was frustrating.

i had my headers changed to the ceramic coated ones. the way the shop did it was to unbolt the motor and drop it down far enough to acsess the rear header bolt. and that's why i had a shop do it.

There has been a handful of guys that did it this way. But I'm thinking about doing it the right way. Still debating and waiting.

I removed your post with the link to the downloadable service manual. It is copyrighted material and we are not interested to linking to it on this board.

I know a google search will turn it up pretty easily, and i know people are selling them on ebay, but mine clearly says copyright, so we can't link to it here unless somebody can prove it is OK with the people that spent a lot of time and money putting the manual together.

It was a nice gesture though, and we do appreciate you helping.

I did the same thing as Klink, by taking it to the dealer. I bought the buell race kit and a ceramic header pipe as well. My local HD and Buell dealer did the work, and it came out to be a total of 6 hours to do from disassembeling to test ride. I didn't have the time to do it myself or all the tools. Besides, having the warranty if something goes wrong is always nice.

No problem.
I got it from another Buell board.
I've actually bought the official workshop manual which I have to say is worth it's weight in gold.
Even something simple like removing the rear wheel would have been difficult without the manual.
Also they are a lot cheaper in the states than in the U.K.
They are £60 here which is like $112.
I think everything in the U.K. is more expensive in £ than it is in $ which means it's twice the price.
I understand the stuff is made in the states but it really annoys me.

I have done what you are trying too do. I have posted on here how I removed all the parts to get to the fan and o2 sensor. Here is some info for ya:

Getting the headers off isn't to bad. I just replaced my headers, I put ceramic coated ones on.

Basically you need to remove the entire back of the bike. Remove the rear shock and you will have access to taking off the fan. Once the fan is removed you can get to the two bolts that hold it in at the top. You will also need to drop the exhaust. I suggest you do that first.

Removing the exhaust:
1.Remove the chin fairing by removing the 4 torx screws that hold it in place. Don't loose the white plastic washers.
2.Loosen the rear axle pinch bolt on the underside of the swingarm.
3.Using the rear axle removal tool unscrew the rear axle 20 full turns. This loosens the drive belt tension.
4.Remove the front belt guard by removing the 3 torx screws that hold it in place. Don't loose the white plastic washers.
5.Unscrew the 2 nuts that retain the belt tensioner and pull the tensioner off of its studs. The studs are a close fit on the holes in the tensioner so be sure to pull off in a straight even manner. Don't try to pry it off. If it sticks then push it back on all the way and try again to pull it off straight.
6.Loosen the clamp on the muffler's inlet.
7.Loosen the clamp bolt that holds the header to the muffler.
8.Loosen and remove the three band clamps that hold the muffler to the frame.
9.Work the muffler off of the header by twisting slightly and you are done.

Okay I have removed the exhaust and such already. I have the bike all jacked up, so the rear wheel isn't touching the ground. I'm just wondering if there is any trick to undoing the shock? Or do you just undo the top bolt on the shock and let her fall?

I probably wouldn't "let her fall" as such... Maybe just jack the bike to where the rear tire is only a couple mm off the ground and gently lower the wheel.

Be sure to check for anything else that may move when you do this too : ). Good luck, I'll be doing the same thing in a few weeks...

Be sure to loosen the belt tension BEFORE you remove the swingarm brace.

Swingarm brace? What is it and where is it?

Don't worry about the belt part I have that very loose.

I can't get the fan out. How do you get that fan out of that hole? I was out there for an hour trying to get the fan out. Any tricks? Thanks

Shotguns work well for that sort of fan removal... Try to miss the tank though.

The swingarm brace is the brace that runs up the right side of the swingarm. If you don't NEED to remove it (you will need to if you want to "completely" remove the belt) then just don't.

I ended up removing the tail section (remember that i'm doing this on an 9r, so it could be different for your bike), not completely just enough to undo the top bolt of the shock . While still giving me enough room to move the shock back out of the way in order to get to the fan screws. I took out the fan screws but the fan hasn't come out yet. I am about ready to take a shotgun to it. I am not sure how i'm going to remove the fan in order to reach the o2 sensor and header. But i'm sure after a while i will get it one way or another(maybe with the help of a torch).

Hey, the pinch bolt, what size is that allen? I've got almost up to that size. Or should I work around it to replace my muffler? Half of you say it's possible, the other half say it's easier to just do it like the service manual says.

I say do it like the service manual. It's not that bad. An extra five minutes.

I think its better than trying to fit a socket between the belt tensioner. Which never worked for me in the first place.

I have no clue what size the pinch bolt is. I just used my tool from my tool pouch.

The only thing I can tell you is that you have to rotate it while still in there and angle it out. It was rough, but it will fit.
