OK, guys. Please bear with me for a bit, I have some questions, but I wanna make sure I have some stuff right first.

I've been reading a bit about the Techlusion TFI, and as I understand it, this unit reads the injector signals from the ECM and modifies them somewhat as it passes them along, possibly lengthening their duration to supply more fuel depending on where in the rev range the engine is, and how the unit is set. However, it does not change the timing or anything else. Correct?

Now, the ECM controls all aspects of the engine, including timing, advance, and fuel injection, right?

What I'd like to know is, if I were to install a race can or other aftermarket exhaust, would I need to install a race ECM or could I get away with a stock ECM running through a Techlusion TFI to prevent lean running?

I appreciate any responses...thanks.

Dobeck recommends that you run a stock ECM with the TFI. And yes, this would seem to be the E-ticket with an aftermarket can.

The TFI (as far as I know) lengthens the number of milli-seconds that the injector is grounded (open). This adds fuel.

The ECM controls spark advance, but the ignition controls static timing (the part under the timing cover).

G, airbox mod with K&N, stock ECM, aftermarket pipe, and the TFI and you will be happy, trust me!!!!

The tfi is great and will improve the bike with an aftermarket can. However, you can run an aftermarket can with just the stock ecm and be fine. Lots of people on this board have done it. The tfi will make it better though.

so if the tfi works great with the stock ecm, how does it do with the race ecm? Is it better/worse/the same?

Well... You would have to come up with your own settings for one. After that I think the only advantage would be a more aggressive advance curve.

I'm using the Race ECM with the stock Dobeck TFI settings and my 9 runs very strong throughout the RPM range. As soon as it warms up outside(6 degrees this morning) I will experiment with the settings.

Thanks, guys.

I'll wait until I get my XB9R, but I'm considering the mods Odie suggested--just wanted to check my options regarding the ECM, in conjunction with an aftermarket can: 1) run stock ECM; 2) run stock ECM with Techlusion TFI; 3) install race ECM; 4) install race ECM and Techlusion TFI.

Sounds like I can go with option 1 or 2 with no problems, or 3 (requires TPI reset), but not 4.

Great. I'll probably consider option 1 first, then add the Techlusion later if I feel it's required.

BTW, when setting the Techlusion--I assume there is an instruction manual with it, but will I require to have the bike on a dyno, or use an O2 sensor, or anything else, or can I just do it in the garage? I didn't see this info on the website...

M1,
"The ECM controls spark advance, but the ignition controls static timing (the part under the timing cover)." Careful, might not want to mislead some here into thinking they can adjust their timing by adjusting "the part under the timing cover", aka the cam position sensor, which affects more than just ignition timing. The EFI also keys off that signal.

Doing anything other than ensuring that the cam position sensor is adjusted per specification risks problems. We probably don't want to give anyone the impression that tinkering with it might be a good idea. The ECM controls ignition timing. If one seeks to adjust ignition timing on an XB or any DDFI Buell, one really should be looking for a fully programable ECM. Wouldn't you agree?

I agree. G, an instruction manual comes with it but there is also an additional page of info on the Dobeck website that is very helpful. It does not require you to have a dyno or any special tools. However, you will get a better tune if you run it on a dyno afterwards but this is not required. The TFI makes a huge difference in throttle response and power....enjoy, Odie.

TFI=good
Pipe=good
stock ECM=good
race ECM=suspect on some xb12's
race filter=good
snorkle remove=good
airbox mods=good
lean mixture=bad- ie all the above can lead to stock ECM setting being lean without the TFI, hence the TFI is a good mod indeed! Some dynos have shown the xb12 race ECM to be only a minor improvement over stock in AF mixture.

PS-if you have a 12 and need to get rid of the servo motor so you can mod the airbox lid, search the archives for the servo emulator circuit I posted up. It is still working flawlessly and I don't even give it a thought anymore. Opto designed a simpler circuit and has had good results as well.

Can someone educate me on "Techlusion TFI" What is it? Is it a replacement performance part? I haven't been on the site for awhile, and last time I was on there was no talk of it. So whats it all about? Would it be a good mod for my 9? So far I have...

Its a little box that takes the injector pulse signals that the ECM delivers and modifies them to be longer. You can select the degree of this modification in different ways to adjust the fuel air mixture across your RPM range. The TFI box also intercepts signals coming from the O2 sensor to fool the ECM think that things are running the way the ECM expects so the check engine light does not come on.
