Hey everyone, not sure if anybody would be into this idea buts it worth a try. Id like to get a set of villian black wheels for my 03xb9. I was wondering if anybody would be willing to trade a set of villian blacks for the silvers from mine straight up. If anybody is interested let me know.

I plan on going with black as well. While it's not free, I checked locally and can get the rims powder coated black for $50 each. Reasonable price. You may be able to find it for less if you check.

If you're thinking of powder coating, remember you have to take out the bearings.
You'll need to replace them, as I understood it you shouldn't try to put the old ones back in.

just had mine powdercoated. Had to get new bearings and new mounting hardware for the rotors and rear pulley, but they look great. I'll try to post a pic once the bike is all back together again...

Yeah, I have to have my black bearings replaced with the orange, so I have to remove them anyway, so I'm having mine powder coated at that point.

Whitetrash, was there a problem with your mounting hardware that you had to replace it?

nope, but the SM suggests not reusing them once they've been removed, so i went ahead and got new ones. Besides, i rounded out the torx heads on a few of them during removal, so i needed some anyways.... FYI, when removing the harware, i think some heat applied to the bolt head will loosen up the loctite that is on them. I didn't and thats how they ended up getting rounded out... real PITA

Having just removed everything from my wheels I will tell you it will cost you close to $150 just for the replacement parts, including the bearings. Just to let you know before you started doing it......Odie

Would it be better to have them powder coated while the old (soon to be tossed away) bearings are still in? That way you wouldn't get any coat inside. I reckon putting new bearings in with the inner wheel being coated & all would be difficult at best.

No bad idea cause then you would damage the powder coat taking them out.They may start to chip away at the edges where the bearings were.

How do you get the new bearings in then? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to stuff like this but isn't powder coating a bit thicker than paint? I'm just curious. The stuff I learn from you guys is amazing. I often just want to sit here with a pencil & notepad in hand.

If you leave the old bearings in you also risk having the heat of the powdercoaters oven causing the grease to run out of the bearing past the seal and trash the paint. A tip - If you get powdercoating in or on places you don't want it, use "Paint and Epoxy Remover" to take it off. But be REAL careful to not get it where it's not slated for removal, it takes the powdercoat off RIGHT NOW! A good powdercoater will do a good masking job and you shouldn't have any of those hassles. Every XB I've seen with the black wheel conversion looked KILLER! Good Luck with that project! AL

I was thinking to put bolts in place of those for the rotors. Is that OK? They would just be temporary (not the factory bolts).

I agree. When my rear bearings went bad last year, believe it or not, the service manager at Cox's HD suggested that if I wanted to do anything to the rims now is the time to do it. He said Buell would be paying all the labor and for the new bearings. All I had to do was pay for pwder coating. I chose to leave the shiny a
parts of the rim alone. Took a while for the coater to get it right, but man was it worth it. If that is the route you go, tell them to show you some examples of BIKE parts that they have done. Usually someone with bike experience will know where powder doesn't need to be before they put it in the furnace.

I left the old bearings in while they went through the oven and no grease cooked out....not saying that it couldn't happen, but I was more worried about the paint getting in the bore. The rims turned out superb. The powdercoater ended up masking the outer face of the rim and it turned out looking fine once everything else went back on.

I did have to sand a little to get the rear sprocket to go back on...and you can see the chips on the lip in the picture...but you really have to have your nose in it to see them.

P.S. if you look at the front rotor in the pic above, you can see I left the rotor mounting bolts in to keep from having to chase the threads. I thought this would look better and had another set (of bolts) anyway....glad I did

on the rear, when I'm running the white pulley (stock powdercoated) I use white bolts also...I put a nut between them and the rim to keep the threads clean during the process.

I also am considering powder coating my rims... but I was looking at going with the lightblue color on my air box. But I am kinda afraid that might be too much. Any input from you guys?

Shawn, does anyone make a translucent blue windscreen option? That may look nice ono your bike.

I LOVE the white. But I can't help but feel one or two more pieces of blue would complete the look.

Perhaps a thin blue pin stripe around the outer rim of the wheel(s) Maybe just on the rear one?

yeah, i know one of the european aftermarket shops carry blue screens, cuz thats what i was looking for to go on my white 9R, but after conversion rate and shipping i think it was gonna be pretty pricey, so i did what any poor white trash would do and shot the underside of the clear screen w/ a few coats of translucent blue. Came out pretty good. Along w/ the blue bar ends and blue powdercoated rims, it should be just enough blue to compliment the white.... damn i wish i had pics to post

40 euros per wheel.

So I need new bearings huh? What else do I need?

you'll need the bolts, washers, bushings, and springs (front wheel) that hold the rotors and rear sprocket on... according to the service manual..........
