Odie dyed his plastic and it came out REALLY sharp!!
Here is a pic of his bike-

I am interested in dying my plastic and need a piece to experiment on.

Does anyone have or know of anyone who has any battle blue plastic body pieces
they would be interested in getting rid of??

This is one of those things you just have to jump in with both feet and do. Come on! Be brave! Do it!
What's the worst that can happen?
No matter what it'll be unique!
Use red, then you'll be riding Barney!

Odie-
You are a brave man. I want to find a piece
to experiment with prior to doing it all.

Blacksunshine and I were talking last night and
thought that it would probably turn a really
cool dark midnight blue if I dipped it in Black.

I can't find any pieces online other than an
airbox cover for $130 and well no need to spend
that kind of $$$ if I'm going to experiment
with it.

Use red, then you'll be riding Barney

NOT!!!

I haven't found any battle blue other than the airbox cover you mentioned, but there is a white chin spoiler on ebay as well as I recall.

how bout the passenger seat cover/cowling from your own bike? if it ends up looking great, then you're on your way...if it looks bad, you got minimal pieces/expense to replace

I checked into it and it's $40 for the piece if I don't like it so if I can't find anything else to work for me that will be the way I go... Thanks

A4R take the airbox cover, flip it over so its a nice BOWL and pour the dye in there. Use it as a test spot.

Love that color Odie. REALLY NICE job. What color were your plastics before you dyed them? What color did you use to dye them and the method? Again, Nice Job, and Love that color.

I've read (I think here) that you can test on a golf ball as the cover is the same material.

Heck, flip the solo seat cover. That would make a really good bowl as well.

hey Odie...did you follow the "CaptainPlanet" method for RIT dye-ing?

Along4theride - is that the method you're going to use? or is there another way?
I have the RIT dye process on my list of winter things to do (white bike will become black) so I'd be interested in how things turn out for you

I believe Odie used navy blue on his red bike.
When I talked to him he made it sound like a pretty simple process, but very involved. Work, time, patients, and lots of kitchen space.; )

(white bike will become black)
Would you maybe settle for dark smoke?

I don't know...we'll have to see

I'm going to work on the theory of more dye and LOTS of time in the dye will make for a dark color

but my seat cowling/sacrificial lamb will give me a good idea

Someone has got to have a damaged blue part around here somewhere!

That is exactly what I'm hoping for.
Wish I could find a salvage dealer that might have one they are parting out. I know where I might find white body parts but that wouldn't do me a lot of good.

Lpoe102 If you're interested I can get the number to the salvage yard that might have the white pieces for you. Then you might not need to 'sacrifice' anything.

Thanks all for the compliments!!! It started out red. I purchased the largest Rubbermaid container at Wallyworld that would fit all of the parts in it. I went by Captain Planets guidelines. I used 4 bottles of Navy Blue and two bottles of black, liquid, Rit dye. Glitch is correct. It was, literally, a whole day of prep, heating water, reheating water, checking the temp, stirring the concoction, wiping up the mess (wife was out of town!) heating more water, cleanup, etc. It wore me out. It was worth it though. It looks even better in person. Everyone that has seen it loves it. Alot of people thought I got a new bike with the wheel color change and the plastics!
I think Glitch is right. You may not get black from white no matter how much you soak it. I am going to do mine in just black this summer to try for a little bit darker but who knows what it will turn out as.
I had my paint supply list ready to go and I thought about the dye thing one more time. I'm glad I did it. It cost me about $25 including the container cost versus $300+ for paint.
Any questions drop me a line.....Later....Odie

Odie,

It looks great. Glad to see someone else finally try it.

My wife was in town when I did it, and of course, caught me using her good cooking pots. She got over it though.

Buell should ship all the bikes w/ white bodywork, and set the dealers up with dye systems...

Odie, your bike looks great! Is the color solid or does it have kind of a swirl?
Also I have the same mirrors(per your info a long time ago, thanks). You can remove the yellow print with adhesive remover then wash with water.

Has anyone actually tried to go from white to black. I have not had my bike for three months. The engine crapped out and the piece by piece rebuild is finally done (extended warranty thank you!). I already have the black RIT dye and plan to do it this weekend or next. When you say dark smoke, how dark? Anyone?

From my experience with mine I would venture to say that you could get it pretty dark but I don't think you will ever reach a true black. You aren't changing the original color but just building on it. I am going to try to get mine a little darker with just some black but I don't know how much further I can go. The way I looked at it was if it didn't turn out good then I would just paint it as planned....Odie
