BadS1, I also have the frame pucks but was recently considering installing the carbon fiber sliders as well. Basically I was wondering if it is overkill, are the carbon fiber pieces thick and make the bike look to bulky and gaudy? |

The carbon covers are thin enough to not look bulky. I have them in stock also! 1-866-757-1651 ask for Dave in the sales dept. |

How much do those CF sliders cost? I prefer them...for the shallow reason of Aesthetics. |

It is possible to paint the Buell pucks isn't it? Or am I thinking of another brand. |

Yes, painting the buell ones has been done. Can't remember who though... But I've seen it here. Yellow bike I think. Yea, Jonathan's! BELOW (Message edited by charlieboy6649 on January 09, 2005) |

I really like the painted pucks! Any information about the procedure or paint type would be great. Thanks, -Brad |

I painted mine silver, but I didn't realize that the Buell spray can of paint isn't formulated as "touch up paint". I should have used primer - anyway the paint chipped off and I spent like three hours removing it all together. |

I went the opposite of BadS1 and made CF sliders for my pucks. No reason other than having them match the rest of the CF.

I'm tooling up those same puck covers now. Thaks for the pictures, Will. I think they look fabulous. They will of course be destroyed in a wreck, so I'll do everything I can to keep the cost down, and will also offer them individually as left and right parts so that a biff is easily restored to pristine condition. Al....Thanks and yes, they will. If you go down they will just tear right off. They are thin (2 layers of cloth with acrylic resin. They are glued on with a special glue we have at work that sticks well to plastics like polypro and polyethylene. I made a small lip on the CF so they kinda "snap" onto the puck |

Now get a set of those on BadS1's bike (I think that is the one I am thinking of), so he can have carbon fiber covers over his frame sliders over his carbon fiber frame covers. That would make them frame slider slider sliders. That will be one SERIOUSLY protected XB frame (and would actually look *great* BTW). |

You know what happens when you don't get enough fiber. It ain't pretty. Great stuff! Must be nice having access to the material and facilities to tinker with CF. I'm envious. |

Blake....CF is abundant here in Prosthetic land. Use it on a daily basis. I made these parts just like I would a Prosthesis but in the shape of Buell parts. Too much CF make you itch like crazy! Way worse that fiberglass. (Message edited by black_sunshine on January 12, 2005) |

I would advise against buying stiff carbon covers for over the factory Buell pucks. The pucks are designed to crush when you fall so you only buy a cheap set of pucks instead of a new frame to replace your dented one. There was a ton of development work done on them, believe me! The inside of the pucks is a crushable material like a helmet liner. The outside shape was designed to be able to deform, yet still keep the puck liner in place long enough to do its job. If you make a stiff outer shell, you run the risk of seeing that shell outline stamped in your frame. Any solid non-crushable version will transfer impact force into the frame. The frames are malleable and will dent a lot, so rupture isn't the issue, but appearance is. |

Anonymous...The ones I fabricated myself are extremely thin (two sheets of cloth carbon). About the thickness of 3 sheets of printer paper. The resin is an acrylic mixture of 60% rigid and 40% flexible that can easily be deformed and the slider itself could be crushed with no more than an index finger. It is not solid by any means. I realized the design of the puck and took that into consideration with my design. In the instance of a crash the sliders would be crumpled like paper and torn off instantly and the puck would be exposed. Thanks for your concern and I appreciate your input. That is exactly why I love this board so much. That is why I posted the pics. |

Yup, that was the plan...no structure, just cosmetic covers. They're cheaper to build if they're thinner, and cheap is the buy word on a part meant to be replaced when dropped. The Buell pucks are really well engineered. The ones American Sport Bike was selling that Tat had designed were rigid, and while better than nothing for spreading the load, were poorly engineered (i.e., too small, too rigid, attachment means less than ideal). I have a bunch of the old ones in stock, I talk everyone that tries to buy them out of them and into the Buell pucks. Mostly I use the old ones as furniture sliders and giveaways for the epoxy that came in the kit these days |

Actually, Blake has nearly unlimited access to carbon fiber. We design parabolic communication antennae for the company we work for and most of the transportable stuff is composite. |
