Anyone help out here.OK,I put jardine on and K+N filter, but when its cold out 35 or below I have a hard time starting the bike. It'll fire up after a few times but die, then when that happens I know I'm in trouble because the plugs will foul themselves.to the point where bike wont even fire. And I'm not twistng throttle as it is trying to start.I Have fouled them before real bad and took out, cleaned and rode them for a 10 miles or so.They seemed fine after that.culd they be shot? Is there something else that would cause this to happen?Or should I just install iridiums and properly warm bike up EVERY time from now on?Has anyone else had trouble starting in the colder weather and fouling plugs easily.I mean it seems too easy.I have never seen plugs get fouled that easily.Or perhaps on startup the injectors? are pouring too much fuel in there?Could that happen?Any help please

From some of the other responses I've seen, I'm guessing that your TPS needs to be set because of the addition of the Jardine.

Big- I went through the same scenario, only I had taken the muffler off to modify. In the process I wanted to hear the straight pipe sound, fouled the plugs out rather quickly. The repair manual also states that a low battery will foul the plugs. I had both, low battery and to much fuel being dumped. Got the Iradiums, and waiting to get a batt.

I had the same problem last winter with my XB12. It turned out to be improperly set timing from the factory. The ecm would compensate for this as long as the weather was warm but as soon as it dipped below freezing it couldn't make up for it and fouled plugs.

Since the timing was reset the bike hasn't fouled a plug. I don't usually start the bike in the winter unless the temperature is at least in the high 30's, low 40's

Worth checking out IMO...

PC >> no, the TPS has nothing to do with the exhaust, or the air filter.

You need to let the bike warm up on every start or there is a greater chance of fouling. But as Gearhead mentioned, have the timing checked, it cant hurt. How long ago did you install the K&N and exhaust? You need to ride the bike to allow the ECM to re-callibrate to the changes that have been performed.

As a side note (mostly)... I recommend letting the bike run for at least one full minute before riding it. In any weather.

Here's another idea, after you fitted the Jardine the bike would have ran rough for a little bit... If it got the opportunity to cough back through the intake it may have loosened the intake seals... Mine did this and basically had the symptoms you have described.

To diagnose, simply have the bike idle and spray an aerosol around the rubber seals... If the idle speed picks up you have leaky seals.

The DDFI will try to add more fuel to compensate for the extra air it's getting through the seals, fowling your plugs.

The Buell tech here fitted new seals under warantee, using a special sealant to ensure it didn't happen again... The offending backfire on my bike was while we were trying to fix the running problems with the race kit ECM, but that's a whole different story.

i put some new(older) plugs in and fired it up.Sounded bad!SO i felt pipes, front got warm ,rear stayed ICE cold.Rear not firing ,checked connections ,everything seems tight. Now what could be wrong?Where the wire connects to coil seems to be a bad? fit.Cant hear a snap or feel it when connecting to coil and seems like it comes disconnected from coil(is that the coil or something else, limited knowledge)really easy.Like its not connected all that well.Any thoughts?

Gearhead, can you remember if the timing was advanced or retarded?

I can't recall off the top of my head... He only did it because at the time my bike was back firing a LOT. He's been involved in a bit of custom work, so it's proly a throw back to those sort of custom jobs... But the reason it was special was because it was safe for the rubber seals and safe for all FI sensors... It was silicon based...

Even if I could remember the name, though, it proly wouldn't be the same as anything available stateside...

I'd say a local custom bike shop should be able to recommend the right stuff...

BTW, the manual recommends no sealant be used... Or is that the manual doesn't recommend any sealant be used... I can't remember, but according to the manual you just fit the seals, no sealant required.

This was an extra step taken by a concientious Buell (ex Ducati) tech.

Bigbuells- in response to your private email-
Mine was a combination problem.
1st- the front wire was chaffed. It was rubbing against the wiring harness and had a hole in it.
2nd- because I took the muffler off and was running the straight header pipe, and kept blipping the throttle, caused the pug to foul out.
Not really a problem, causeI was due for the 10K service which requires plug change. Got a new wire and new NGK plugs in yesterday. Started it up and she ran perfect!!
I see in your post above that you believe the wire dosn't feel like it is connecting? I had the same problem with the new wire. I looked at the outline left by the other wire on the coil post and kept pushing on it until I heard the click, or felt it anyway.
And I also got the new battery in. So I believe I got all the bases covered. That waits to be seen, I'll go for the first test run soon. Email me if you got other questions.

Trench: Thanks. I'll see what I can find out. You know, mine did that same thing of sneezing back through the intake a few times. I think that may be what took the seals out to start with.

Thanks for the response U4.I'll try brand new plugs first and on that plug wire I guess I'm just going to have to use a little more elbow grease but it helps knowing you can feel or hear it click into coil. Thanks a bunch
