My 2007 XB12S stopped running while on a ride the other day and the motor seems to be locked up. It has 30K miles on it, so the 2007 crank curse may have struck. It has had a rattle that I assumed was a loose baffle in the original muffler. Over next winter, I am considering taking it apart and dealing with the crank, if that is the problem. Used cranks are available, but are new crankpin assemblies available/suitable or a better idea, such as for same year Sportsters? I will search BadWeb to see what using a 2008 crank involves.

Splitting the cases to check what is wrong brings up some questions regarding special tools:
1. Is there a cheaper alternative to the official clutch spring tool?
2. On a similar primary drive, I made a primary sprocket locking tool from 3/16 in thick oak and it worked well. Would one of the right length for a Buell work OK?
3. I have a two jaw puller that should work on the engine sprocket.
4. It is hard to tell if a Sportster crankshaft guide tool would work. Any thoughts, is one necessary?
5. Any other special tools to split the cases?

Any general tips?

I am not a huge Sportster engine guy and I am sure that there are more knowledgeable people out there than me but usually if a crank ties up, while on a ride bad things happen and lots of bad noises ensue. Since you didn't mention noise of holes in the case I get the feeling that the bike just stopped without a lot of drama. You could have dropped a valve or it be stuck in gear. I would pull the primary case and put a wrench on the crank nut. Turn the engine back away from the direction of rotation and verify you have a locked crank before doing anything.

Might do to take your oil filter off and cut it open. Should let you know right away if you have a problem or a PROBLEM.

Thanks to both gents, I have some other things to work on first, but I'll try both.

Well, a friend said he was looking for XB forks and wheels for a special and I decided that I didn't want to tear into the motor, so I sold it to him. So, no more Buell. I wasn't riding it much anyway. Now to try to sell some of my spare parts.
