After reading a lot of posts on this site about the need for more air into the intake I decided to try the XB12 air box with some very large vent holes on my 9. But then I started asking myself how this modification will do any good at all with out letting more air in from somewhere. So I decided to also modify the outer air box cover to let more air in and got a great result in the power delivery. Attached (hopefully) are some pictures of the modification and the dyno sheet before and after. This bike has a stock ecm and pipe. | ||

if you had a mod like xb9erfan's (which looks great by the way...good job), would it make sense to close off the "hole" that feeds air up to the airbox? (the one the snorkel used to feed through) Would this force the engine to suck/pull cooler air through the new openings? Or would you end up starving the engine of air? | ||

How does it get more air in it if it is behind the faring? Just because there is more available air. I think you may be thinking of ram air. Ram air won't help until triple digits. | ||

The mesh is a stainless screen held in with a professional strength epoxy used in body shops. When you look at the way the "air scoop" is actually being used on the XB models it is not ram air, therefore all the free air you can get the better. The dyno is a Dyno Jet 250 at the local Harley dealer. | ||

Oh goodness, at first I thought that is a aftermarket airbox. You mean you did it in your garage. Excellent looking! How long did it take? How did you get it to stay on? Is the Dyno chart showing before and after for JUST that mod (the opening of airbox)? How did you cut the airbox cover? You very likely can make some money for selling this. Just sell the screen / bracket part along with a template for people to accuratly cut the hole and you are set. I'm definitely in if you decide to do that. | ||

Still not bad at all. If it were me, I would have different sized holes on both sides. Do you use dremel or just cutters? | ||

I Cut the larger with a die grinder (dremel) same thing i guess with a 2 inch I used a steel cutting wheel (cheap) works okay , got to go at it the right speed u will see or the material heats up and turns like a melting plastic no big deal...For the smaller up front u can use the same wheel but tighter area I used a jig saw metal blade kind of messy ,as above gums up when cutting oh well I think it was worth the time and effort.. | ||

Then I used a hand file for awhile and then different grits of sandpaper say 80 grit and finished all up to 500 or 600 grit this was a used white xb9 cover that I repainted black... only bad thing about that is If you chip the paint I wd. think it wd. chip a piece off and then you see the white under it.. So far no plms. but maybe wd. do it on another same color as your own bike if you could get one from ebay etc. But even then the smooth sanding you wd. probally scratch the other areas that you didn`t want to follow me... | ||

Got it. Thank you. quite some work. It would definitely be nice if there is a spare cover to work with. I believe (and it says in the manual) that the plastic on the XB is "molded-in" color plastic. I think they mean the color is the same throughout the plastic piece. Even if you put a chip in the plastic, the underlaying color would still be the same as what it is on the outside. The FZ6 from Yammy has the same thing they some magazines went out of their way to mention that when it first came out. | ||

how come the dyno says the max rpm is 7500?? is the redline governed by the ecm at 6700? i could be wrong though. | ||

Xb9erfan, What were the conditions (temperature and altitude) for your dyno run. It show actual HP instead of SAE or STD corrected values. Can you get another plot with the SAE corrected numbers? I'm guessing a D&D muffler? | ||

hey xb9er, if you didnt leave that piece of plastic in the middle of your two cuts do u think it would be really wobbly and weak? im just trying to envision different ways i can get more air into the box. |
