Whodom

Since this topic has come up here several times, I thought the following would be of interest.

There are a couple of letters in this month's Motorcycle Consumer News regarding single hose gas pumps. One of them is a response from someone in the industry. His letter states that the National Weights and Measures Conference, which governs consumer issues on the accuracy of dispenser meters, has a long-standing upper limit of 0.3 gallons for "co-mingling" of different grades of gas on a single hose pump. That at least gives us some kind of semi-authoritative data on the subject.

Of course, the other letter is from a rider who noted that he purchased gas from a single-hose-pump station at which the fuels had distinctly different colors to differentiate premium from the lower grades, and when he watched the fuel being dispensed, it took between 1/2 and 3/4 of a gallon for the color to change. So much for industry criteria.

The other point of interest is that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has mandated that all new gas stations have to have single hose dispensers (to reduce the occurrence of leaks).
