Who has really wanted to use the shoulder to pass by cars lined two up beside each other on a highway both going exceedingly sloooow?

Who has actually done it?

So tempting.

I'm too paranoid to - what if someone in a cage gets the same idea (and they do, a LOT) and decides to pull out just as you go by?

...the thought has crossed my mind, though, many times.

I did it years ago when I was young and stupid. Passed three cars on the far left shoulder doing well over 100. plain stupid.

I think I'd rather wait, and then give the ole' stink-eye as I pass by...eventually.

If that game is played too long I just try to get behind one of them and just start using the pass button (hi beams) on and off...that usually gets them focused on what is going on behind them and they will either slow down or speed up...that breaks up the roadblock.

Of course sometimes this takes a minute or two for those dull tools needing some sharpening...

Its legal in a couple states (not certain which ones), Its called "White Lining" where you ride in the shoulder at little faster then the stalled traffic is moving. In Cali you can legally lanesplit. There is some debate as to which is safer.

Other than being very dangerous. I could only imagine what some bike hating judge would do to a person who did that sort of thing.

I don't think the insurance man would would give the safe driver discount next year.

The fear of the fines keeps me out of the shoulder/emergency lane.

Don't know what the penalty would be.

In Europe it is accepted ...we used to ride the center lane at 75 regardless of the speed of cars...never worried about some one giving you a door like they would here in the states...................

Europe has different laws in different countries. In the Netherlands, splitting lanes is more or less accepted, but still illegal. Using shoulders is gonna get you fined without doubt.

I split lanes when the speed drops below 50mph on highways. Sometimes I get anoyed and pass 'em on any side possible, but I try not to make a habit out of it. Not that that makes a difference though, it's plain stupid to do so.

In the UK using the hard shoulder is a definate no no, emergency vehicles and breakdowns only. It will earn you the wrath of the local Constabulary. As for filtering(lane splitting) there is no law against it although if an accident did occur whilst you were doing so I fear the the finger of blame would be pointing in your direction. That being said, I filter, as its the only way sometimes of getting past those mobile roadblocks.

I've done it, and got ticketed. -fortunately that was when only 'points were issued against insurance and not cash.

I'll still take a chance now and then, usually on a on ramp where traffic is porked. I'm not going 60mph though.

I find that the motorcycle passing lane (shoulder) is very convenient on occasion, but it's use is diminishing with age.

I can't risk the fact that there are debris (could have nails, broken glass, etc) on the shoulder to gain couple of minutes from the commute.

last time I'll addmit to doing so, it resulted in a conversation with the constabulary -- caame out a draw, which I took to be a sign ;-}

Never done it, although I got forced onto the shoulder by a lady talking on a cell phone, when she switched lanes without a signal. I wanted to give her the middle finger when I went past, but instead just gave her the old stare and the wave of the index finger as I went past.

In September on a nice warm saturday we had lots of sight seers on the road. A local guy decided to take that option. the lead car just turned into a driveway and scratch one biker. Very messy. turned an otherwise beautiful riding day into a bummer.

When traffic comes to a halt, like here in DC area, it's legal at certain major roads. Regardless, people do it all the time here. So one must keep an eye out on the shoulder at all times.

That's kinda sucks because then people will start abusing it. They will treat it as another lane. When in a situation where someone really needs to use the shoulder to park/pass then the situation becomes dangerous.

Me! Me! In traffic jams I do it-I noted that you said when they were really slow. The DC beltway can be murder and I have on three or so times, shouldered it at a very slow rate of speed (15 - 25mph). When they are just plain driving slow...I'm sure that I have but I can't recall.

I have done it & will continue to do it when needed. I have also done illegal lanesplitting & even a time or two have actually utilized a short section of sidewalk to ease my way around.

Is it lawful? Nope, but im doing my part to ease congestion & help save gas by not sitting in traffic idling: D

Dave and I have done it when traffic has come to a stop on the interstate because of an accident up ahead. I was almost hit by a guy flying up behind us and didn't realize everyone was stopped until it was too late. He was just a few inches away when he skidded past me. Sure scared me. I'd rather get a ticket than get run over.A few years ago in Nebraska we took the shoulder to get away from the back and good thing we did. That night in our motel room on the news a guy in a truck ran into the back of another truck and they were killed. I don't think it's a passing lane though.
