What's the break in period for the XB9SX?

Do you think there are any negative affects to breaking in a bike over the winter months (say riding occasionally on those sunny 30-40 degree days), I mean would the cold weather be bad for break in?

Just curious.

I'm new to this forum as well.... Got my XB12R 1 week ago and am doing the same thing. Book says 500 break in miles and I know that the engine still gets warm, even in 30-40 degree weather. I would think you are fine. For those interested, the 2004 12R is going for about 8500 new right now

Yea, mostly just worried about those hard starts and thickening of the oil (I've only ever owned a carb'd bike).

On that note, anyone have experience starting these puppies on cold New England mornings? like mid to high 20's? Does the fuel inj make it a no brainer, or can you still have trouble starting?

when I bought my bike (xb9sx) from the dealership there where 2 models on the floor. One was a demo and the one I bought was brand new out of the crate. The demo had 600 miles.Two weeks after I bought mine they sold the demo. I was in there last week and saw a 9sx all tore apart and asked, wasup? They said it was the demo and that they had to replace the rings. They said the guy brang it back smokin! gas and oil through the exhaust.They said it probably(dealerships famous word) was due to abuse during the break-in period.They told me when I bought mine to take it easy for the first 500 miles.I did and my bike seems to run better the more and more miles I put on it. And it definitely aint smokin! at least not from the motor! and I'm proud to say, I'm not easy on it anymore!

Manuel says 500 miles. I followed that and the day I hit 500 was the day I used my bike. Still have a good smile from that.. 1700 miles now in about 3 weeks.

obviously you'd take it easy on the throttle to allow for a longer warmup.
And use the appropriate oil viscosity for the temp. (in owners manual)

Yup, let it warm up thoroughly each time before you ride - try to completely heat cycle between each use - 500 miles at under 2500 RPM / no fast that 55MPH.

I can't understand the "under 2500rpm" bit, just ride it normal and don't flog it too much if it's hot. And don't lug it, which is extremely easy to do under 2500 rpm.
