FYI,

I was changing my sparkplugs and wires on my '04 xb12r and was pondering removing the fuel vapor recycling cannister. I noticed the return line to the throttle body was pushed down alongside the ignition coil. When I pulled it up I noticed that the coil had rubbed a hole in the side of the neoprene tube. That means I have had an intake leak for some time (also unfiltered air entering the intake track : () It may have been part of my pinging problem in the past.

I would suggest checking this vulnerable area on California models if you have the airbox off the bike. Also in my opinion it should have been armored with some wire loom plastic like some of the wiring in the same area.

It seems to me that because of the movement of the rubber mounted engine, the routing of many parts on the xb is critical or wear will occur due to chafing.

Totally true and something we all should be considering when doing istallations like the TFi.

When mine had it intake leak (actually leaking inlet seals) it would cough and splutter and generally misbehave when cold. Now, when I say cold, I live in tropical NTH QLD, so it's a relative thing.

This problem didn't seem to have any effect on the hot running of the bike, I mean, we replaced the leaky seals and used intake sealant and the bike still exibited the same pinging issues.
