Love my CityX. But I wish it had the 12 motor. Picked bike up for service and spoke to salesman. He'll give me what I paid minus the VAT (17.5%) on mine against a 12, which I would put some CityX bits on for sure (Seat, maybe airbox cover and guard). So It'll cost me about £750 but I'm sure I could wangle some more dollar out of the deal.

Question, is it worth doing? Is the 12 motor really much better than the 9?

Help please before I spend more cash!

I think it depends on what you want... From what I've read it seems the nine may be a little easier to ride fast, but the twelve is faster. I personally think that boring the nine with it's higher rev limit will be a better track engine than the twelve, but the bored twelve at 88" will be a better street engine. For me... I'll have one of each. The nine for the track (but bored as far as it'll go) and a 12 for the street (bored as far as it'll go).

Have you ridden 12 yet?I rode an 03 9s with D and D and race ecm before I got my 12r.It was every bit as fun and I believe it (9) to wheelier a ittle easier. Now I dont know if thats because it was an S and mine is an R but that was my take on it.I wish I had both 9S and keep my 12.Gonna be a tough decision.

I think the "S" models will pull the front up a little easier. Very easy on a 12R though...

i have ridden both 984 and 1203 cc versions, they are different in character, but very close in both acceleration, and top speed. the 9 is geared around 10% shorter, has a shorter stroke, and revs higher, so the net result is they are very similar. i think you may well need to have one of each in your garage. give thanks for all of our choices. regards, dean

I was looking at the back of one of the mag. on the performance #'s on 9's vs. 12's.

When some of you say they are same in acceleration, may be that's how the butt dyno feels. In reality, the 12 is a whole lot faster than the 9's. I'm sure both are as fun, though.

I've ridden both and I'll admit the 12 sure puts a s--t eating grin on your face but the 9 seemed more FUN to ride hard. I love my CityX but I keep thinking a 1050 big bore kit and some head work might liven things up a bit. So maybe getting the 12 would scratch that power itch but I'd see about a demo ride(if possible)before taking the plunge and MAYBE having regrets.

As has been said before, the 9 is a much more tuneable engine than the 12 simply because it revs higher. Personally I find the 9 more satisfying to ride fast than the 12 (we had both engines in our race bike over the season) although it lacks the bottom end grunt of the 12. I would try to test a tuned 9 (hard to find in the UK admittedly) before making the final decision. If you want to give us a ring and chat about tuning bits please do. 01325 483551

Thanks all you guys.

Trojan, I see there's a 1200 kit for the 9's. It requires some boring and I bet some ECM work, but with th higher rev limit I bet that puts out some power too!

ok just my thoughts..when i started looking it seemed like used 9's were about all i saw on e-bay,cycle trader etc. a lot of them with very low miles. so that made me think how come? ok maybe the 9 is more tuneable but the 12 already has 11 more hp and 14 more ft lbs of torque, at the sacrifice of 10 lbs of weight. seems like a great trade off to me. and it's only about 500.00 more than a 9...so to me the smart choice was to get the 12...if you put a race kit on a 9 how much is that? more than 500.00 right? and do you get the torque of a 12 with a race kit on a 9?....smart money is a 12....go get it i say

Personally, I'm tickled with my 9. When I bought it the 12's didn't exist. I didn't know they were coming ( I didn't have any insight on Buell or this site) and they showed up about a month later. I did have some regrets at first, but none now. The money I saved up front has allowed me to tweak my bike a little at a time. My advice is keep the 9 and start tinkering!

Just wondering - for some that are saying the 9 is more fun "mainly" due to the higher rev, does 500 rpm higher really give you that much more fun?

I just can't understand that concept since I'm coming from the high reving world of Jap bikes. Also, don't you think the extra torque & HP from the 12 would equalize the extra 500 rpm pretty well?

Here's a review (by a Canadian site i believe) that has both the 9 and the 12 together. It's an interesting read. Enjoy!

Yup, interesting indeed. They picked the 12, but not without some praises and number of issues with the bike.

Seems like the only thing that they like is the bike being different - style, rattling, sound and torque.

They don't like the handling, don't like the low rev and they don't like the bike being a daily driver.

I thought this bike is good around town because of the torque and this bike is good in handling because of the low COG. They have actually given reason as to why they don't like the two biggest selling points of this bike... whew, I don't know what to take of it.

I dunno...I guess I read it in a different light. Sure they had some niggles to pick but I thought for the most part it was very positive.

Whatever...what it always boils down to is what you think when you ride your (insert your bike here).

Sorry to take you thread off tangent Nick! I still think keep your CityX and start tinkering!

Thanks again people. I think I am going to stick with the CityX. Sure, the 12 has more power, period, but I keep reading the 9 is nicer to live with every day. It is smart. If Buell bring out an XB12CityX though, I'll have one.

I thought it was rather good article & very positive. I mean the only real gripe they have is the gas cap & a number of folks here have mentioned it also. If thats their only complaint then I would say they give the bike a big thumbs up.
