Manual says 0.7 gallons is for reserve - I fuel up when the light comes on and manage to get 2.8 gallons in before I see it up to the neck. So that tells me there's 0.9 gallons in there to start with - which is ok, better safe than sorry. This is all assuming that the 3.7 gallon capacity includes that 0.7 reserve.

So how many miles do you guys go when you "see the light" - how much fuel do you squeeze in? Anyone ever blow it and run out?

I've pushed it no further than 27 miles.
Shred ran out at...I want to say 30, but I'm not sure.

Glitch-
Shred ran out right at 28, it would have been nice if he'd gotten those other 2 miles he might have made it to the gas station.

On one occasion I got 40 miles from the time the fuel light came on til I hit the station and got 3.3 gallons of fuel. The second time I pushed it I got 32 miles and ran out, she sucked down 3.6 gallons. Since then I try not to go more then 20 miles on the reserve. Now you may be asking if my fuel milage was off or different for both days...nope, I still pulled my usual 55mpg.

I can safely count on another 30 miles when my fuel light comes on. I have pushed it to 40 miles occasionally without running out of fuel. The one time I did run out of fuel, I think I was just over the 40 mile mark.

2003 XB9R bone stock.

I put on like 31 miles yesterday on reserve. Topped the tank of with 3.388 gallons.

How I look at it is that I have been getting about 49 mpg, so the reserve at .7 gallons would give me 34.3 miles on reserve. I had 15 miles on the reserve odometer when I left work last night and was pressed for time to make an appointment so I didn't want to stop for fuel. I knew I had about 15 miles to my appointment and a gas station next door to that stop. Figured I would be safe if I stayed out of the throttle. The fuel light seems to trigger a little early too with fuel sloshing around in the tank. Figure that buys a just a little safety margin on that 34 miles.

Oh and by the numbers I still had .3 gallons of fuel and another 14 miles until bone dry. I really don't want to test that one though.

At 130 miles my light comes on. If I refuel right away it takes about 2.4 gallons. Which should mean I have over a gallon in reserve.

i can go 30 miles on reserve, if i am not in a big hurry. my longest tank went 156 miles. i dont think we have a full 3.7 gallons of USABLE fuel in our frames.

This stinks. My 9 usually clicks on the light around 110 miles or so with mostly easy riding. Of course the tank on my bike is never completely full because I fill it until it's 1 or 2 inches from the "lower hole" inside. Could cause the lower mileage.

You bettcha!
That's where the tank is widest.
Go ahead and fill it up til the gas just touches the upper lip.
Unless of course you're more comfortable doing it the way you are and don't mind the fill up every 110.

I went for a 180 mile ride Sunday on my '04 XB12S, 40 miles was with the fuel light on.
Still had half a gallon left in the tank.

LOL...maybe, but I bet you whatever the fill-up cost that you wouldn't be able to USE the whole half-gallon. I've run my tank dry once, and it took 3.4 gallons to fill it back up. the farthest I've ever gone on reserve was 45 miles coming home from the NE Adventure, and believe me I was on fumes - took 3.398 gallons to fill it up.

Maybe if you could turn the bike upside down to the left, then back upright opposite that, you might, MIGHT get to use all 3.7 gallons.

As an aside, I've noticed my economy is/has gone downhill since I came back from Japan. At first I thought it was just due to the engine being 'stiff' from nine months in stasis, but now I'm not so sure...I used to get 48-50mpg no matter how I rode, and now I seem to be lucky to get 45. -=shrugs=-

I ran out at 28 miles the one time I ran out. That was all 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear putting around town. I've been to 31 cruising along the freeway.

So yer sayin' if I find a really twisty road, I might get 200 miles out of a tank?

I did misspeak myself, I was thinking the tank held 3.9 gallons so I had closer to .3 gallons left.

I don't plan on doing it again as that was cutting it way too close, butt I was curious and I was close to home.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I was getting as much as 59 MPG when I first got the bike (12R) Now, with drummer, Race ECM, drilled A/B, and the fact I seldom shift into 5th at less than 70 mph, I am averaging 49mpg, ran out once, filled to the brim, took 3.4 gals.

2000 X1 Lightning. Only seen the fuel low light once and "tested" it to just under 20 miles, then I got to walk it the last 100 yards to the station. Now I'm a bit paranoid and head straight to the station if I see the light. Bike gets almost 45 miles to the gallon, I mistakenly thought it came on with about 1 gallon, hence I was figuring I had about 45 miles. Nope! Funny, when my speedo sensor broke I only had it to figure out fillups, and didn't run out once...

my low fuel light comes on after about 110-115 miles. I've pushed it another 10-15 after that and fill up about 2.7 gallons at the station.

I kinda wish my 'bolt had a bigger tank.

mine seems to come on at about 100 miles, and I have pushed reserve to about 15 miles so far. I make a lot of short trips, but even on long hauls it is still just about 100-110 to a tank.

Yeah, I make a lot of short trips too. And I always warm the bike up before riding it, so I think that affects my mileage -- burning fuel to warm up before the ride.

While on a trip this summer as part of the "Running the Ridge", I kept mileage information at each fill up. I finally took the time to do all the figures. I thought it was intersting. All but two tankfulls of gas were from hard running. Interstate running of 75+ to 5k plus revving in the twisties. The two exceptions were; getting lost on a dead end road WAY out in the Telico Plains area of Tennesee, and having to baby it back to civilization, for fear of being lost AND out of gas. And, from Key West to West Palm Beach, FL (to much sun and fun with no real hurry).

I averaged 50.7 mpg, with a low of 53.5 and a high of 64.4 mpg. The longest distance on one tankfull was on my above listed exception from Key West to West Palm Beach. The low fuel light came on at about 168 miles. I did some quick math on my estimated consumption and decided to push my luck (gas stations on most every corner it seemed). When I got to 200.0 miles I chickened out and pulled in for some gas! It took 3.202 gallons to fill it back up, so I still SHOULD have had some miles left. For the record, I WAS puttering along (as stated above) and I generally fill to allitle above the inner rim on the fuel tank (about a half inch with no overflow, so this gets me a little exta range.

The biggest thing that this showed me was that if you don't know where the next gas station is, if you back out of the throtle (I KNOW, this is NOT the thing any self-respecting Bueller wants to do!) that it MAY make the difference in making it or not!

Just my .02 cents worth!
