Finally, done with break in. Now it's time to use this engine. Put in synthetic oil at 200 miles. Just got to check the oil and away we go. |

Dude, so many folks are about to tell you to use dino oil until a couple thousand miles..... I'll let them tell you why?? p.s. is'nt break-in 1000mi, or is it different now?? |

Hit 400 miles tonight - can't wait to stretch the legs a little. It's a real pain living in a rural area where the only roads that go anywhere are 65MPH highways. That 55MPH break in for 500 miles is a killer! |

Let the war begin over oil. Besides, I find my shifting it way better with synthetic now and the engine runs cooler with it. Fan doesn't come on so much. Still comes on after being on the highway for a bit but otherwise. Anyways, what a blast. Suckers got some nice power. (Message edited by cataract2 on November 08, 2004) |

I just switched mine over to synthetic at 4000 miles. It was the first oil change where the magnet on the drain plug wasn't covered in metal. Although the trans plug did have metal on it. |

Hey, to each his own. I doubt very much running synthetic will hurt this engine with break in or after it in any way considering there are vehicals coming from the factery with it. (I believe the VROD is one) So.... I choose to lessen the wear. |

I doubt very much running synthetic will hurt this engine with break in or after it in any way I believe it won't hurt the engine at all. That's just a load of bull. Break in might take longer because synth has less friction. Most important thing is the rings are bedded in. Someone whom I regard as one who knows what he is saying once mentioned that over 90% of the bedding is done in the first 50 miles, IF you run it right. To me, that's the most important thing. Now ride it like you stole it! |

Just ride it. Harley already did you the curteousy of beating the crap outta the engine to make sure they didn't ship a lemon. |

Beating the hell of it as we speak. Well, not abusing it but I sure am using it. Love the power... Can't wait for the race kit. BTW, what did they do different to the engine in the SX vs. the earilier 900's? |

OOOOOOps!!! didn't mean to start any war or anything!!!! I'm about to go for the 1k mi. service and I'm sure they will put dino in, but I plan to switch to synth at about 1500. My bike may well never see the dealer again after the 1k service, depending on how well(or not) it goes. |

Why do you think some brands of bikes came out of the crate with a mile or more on them? Maybe they pushed it round the factory with the ignition key in the on position? Or they could have run it to make sure it was assembled properly and things like the idle, timing and TPS are all within the ballpark tolerances. I'm sure they would need to rev it more than 2500rpm for that. Mine only had a couple of hundred metres on the odometer so I'm thinking Harley runs them prior to fitting them in the frames or at least before they get gauges. I have a friend who works as a mechanical engineer in the Ford Australia Engine plant and his job is supervising the stripping down the ones that pop on the test dyno to determine what went wrong and have the parts batchs analysed. Maybe one of the dealers on here will give their account of the usual miles on the odometer when first turning the ignition one. |

synthetic oil is way too slippery to go 55 mph before break-in miles are up. the math is like this: 55 miles per hour times 63360 inches per mile times 3.8125 inches per stroke times 2 strokes per revolution times 60 minutes per hour times 2800 rpm@55 mph and divided by( 20w-50) raised to the power of K the coefficient of friction with respect to latent heat of vaporization y, and then the whole quantity multiplied times the magnuson-moss consumer protection act will catagorically demonstrate the fallacy of running an inferior breakin lubricant at less than 60 miles per hour on a sustained basis. Your Mileage May Vary |

gonna ride it hard, break it in hard. well maybe not that hard...i'm at about 500 miles...no way i coulda kept under 55...so just made sure i didn't pin it...and varied my speed a lot on the highway....but i'm ready to torque it |

Just remember, there is no going back and you will have it for a long time, hopefully. Break- ins suck but are over before you know it. You would not want your dentist to rush through a root canal and be sloppy about it just so its over quickly. Same thing. |

One thing I have noticed - break in sends me to the gas station a lot - maybe because give'er extra time to get nice and warmed up before I ride - probably the extra friction has a lot to do with it - I usually see about 2.8 gallons before the drink is full to the neck. Fuelled up three times already in 400 miles. |

I broke mine in kinda hard, no specific problems, now I ride it like I stole it and at 8,500 miles in 5 months it still runs great. |

I followed break in just about to the letter, and the initial fuel economy was really crappy compared to what I am getting now. It probably went from 41 mpg during break in to closer to 50 mpg at 1500 miles. |
