Howdy... I've been lurking here for a while, and decided it would be a good time for a post, and to pose a question... My girlfriend and I are considering purchasing a bike. The problem is, we are both interested in different types. She wants a metric cruiser of the Suzuki Volusia variety, and I, after visiting a Harley/Buell dealer in Austin, Texas, want a Buell in the worst way, especially after spying the CityX. We have quite a few short, twisty roads in my county with a wide variety of corners, and I think a Buell would fit in quite nicely. What do you think? Any ideas to persuade her? By the way, this is a great dilemma to have, and I don't think I could lose either way. | ||

I don't think anybody here is gonna tell ya to get the Volusia  I went on several rides with my wife on my dad's bike. An Electra Glide. She LOVED IT. Me too because ..uh .. the weather was so nice. We went on a LONG ride on the buell (3 days). Her hips hurt, her legs hurt, her back hurt, My wrists and neck were hurting because she was leaning against me all the time. BUT WE HAD A HECK OF A TIME! Wouldn't want it any other way! Go ride with her on the cityx. If it's not her thing, get 2 bikes.  Oh, and welcome to the madhouse buddy. | ||

Stealthxb - I live on the southern edge of the "Hill Country," in Caldwell County. It' primarily rural, and on a Sunday morning just about all of the roads are deserted. There is a lot of fun to be had out here, I think. Ingemar - Thanks for the welcome! I wish we could afford 2 bikes, then the dilemma would be solved. HMMMM... maybe if we got rid of one vehicle... and there is an agreement to carpool on rainy days... the ol' wheels are turning... | ||

first thing; get the Buell. then if your lady wants to ride to, fetch up a nice used 883 sportster. they are easy to find, easy to ride, easy to maintain, get very good fuel economy, easy to sell when you want something different. then you can both ride all you want. | ||

Ferris...One of the greatest pleasures in life is riding two up with someone you feel for... A good friend of mine was invited to the press release of the ST1300 three years ago in Cali...He loved the bike, road and track...So much so that he called our local dealer and ordered one from the track side in Cali...Then Honda NA loaned he and his wife of 37 years a GL1800 for a week of riding in Cali...His wife fell in love with the GL and the comfort it offered her...But when they got home she told him to get what HE wanted...He bought the ST...This past summer they went to Colo on the ST and as he was watching her get off the bike at the end of a long day he kicked himself...As soon as they got home he traded the ST for a GL...Now he and his wife are riding together much more as she often suggests "let's go for a ride"... So, please first get the bike she wants and then, maybe later, the one up bike you want... My friend is now looking for a nice used RC51 only ridden by a little old lady on Sundays... True. A buddy at work has a year old Yamaha 650cc cruiser, nice looking bike. Underpowered, but very ridable. 3000 miles on the thing, and if you offered him $2500 he would probably take it. Buy the CityX (I love mine) and get a small displacement (but nice looking) cruiser as well. | ||

I'm with the 2 bike crowd. The wife started with a Blast! and then went to a Shadow VLX 600 for a while and yesterday we just bought an '05 XL883C for her. She really enjoys riding her own bike much more than being on the back of mine. BTW: I have a clean '93 Shadow VLX for sale if anyone is interested? | ||

OK, now you got yourself your Buell, well done. First thing you do is remove the passenger pegs, like everyone else does, ( make sure you put the bolts back to hold the battery). Second thing is get your old lady her own bike. It is merely the politically correct thing to do. Leave the passenger pegs on her ride. Now if you want to ride together, you just get on the pillion and hold on tight. Get it? | ||

Hey all - Thanks for the welcomes. I hadn't thought of the Buell 1st, Sporty 2nd option. Sounds like a good idea to me. The first plan for us is to take the MSF and get our gear. It's been a while since I've been on a bike and I'm probably more than a little rusty. The Girlfriend has never ridden, but is more than willing to take the classes and learn slowly. Anyway, great responses and thanks again!  | ||

Ferris, as said, welcome to the sickness. As for riding double on the buell, my wife and I do every weekend. I too had a problem with the sore arms and wrist due to her weight on me, then we learned how to ride it correctly. She now places her arms around me, and puts her hand on the back of the airbox cover when I am braking, or riding the twisted back roads. As for highway or less curved runs, well, her hands fit nice an comfy like, between my legs  . As for the cruiser thing, we were fortunate enough to ride a V-rod for a couple of days, and when I got the Buell, 12R, she was not happy. After our first weekend ride, she looked at me and said, she hates to admit, but she is much more comfortable on the Buell. She now owns a ton of Buell apparel. Good luck! | ||

She's .. uh ... different in every sense! It wasn't like complete agony of course. But I think your comfort greatly depend on your physical condition. Besides, she needs to pee more than my bike needs gas ... that gives us enough breaks to stretch our limbs. |
