Picked up the XB12R this weekend. Met Erik Buell as well. OK, there is a full race kit on the bike installed by the dealer. 6 miles into the 350 mile Chicago to St. Louis trip, the speedo stopped working. It would creep off zero a little over 3500 rpm, but only 60 miles were counted of the 350. Next, the idle would hang at 2200 or so when coming to a stop. After 5 seconds, it settled down to 1000rpm. Last, the fan ran alot, even during normal cruising in cool weather. Any ideas? Took a 150 sport ride yesterday, and by the end of the day, the speedo appeared to be working better, or maybe even correctly - will check tonight. Do I have to use a Buell Oil Filter?? When should I change the tranny fluid. I can't says I broke it in nicely. Not abusive, but not timidly either.

Are you saying that your tach works, but the speedometer doesn't?

Anyway, if your the engine is slow to return to the idle, it can mean several things are not set properly:
1. idle setting is set too high (needs to be 1050-1150rpm). Try lowering the idle and see if that solves the problem;
2. TPS is not set properly (to do this you do to go to the dealer or find someone with the Technoresearch tool in your area)

As to breaking in the bike and selecting lubricant/oil filter, do a search here - there has been much debate here. You'll find much information in this site.

Any chance the dealer did some disassembly and didn't get an intake seal in correctly? Both the idle issue, and the heat could point to an intake leak. If so, that is something you want to get checked and fixed *right now*. Spray mist of water, WD40, brake cleaner or similar in around the throttle body and intake ports with the bike warm and idling. If idle changes you have an intake leak.

On a new bike, you'll just have to get used to the fan being on a lot. After 5thousand miles or so it'll get less and less. Synthetic also helps.

Henrik,

You mean't spraying flammable liquid (like propane) around the engine header to see if there's a spike change in rpm. Right? Otherwise, spraying in the intake area will draw the spray and cause engine spike regardless whether there's a leak or not.

Could be the speed sensor, I had that happen to me on my Road King a few months back. the speedo went all the way over then back and then didn't work. But the tach was fine.

You know great advise in all from you guys. I would take to dealer let them screw with it. It under warrenty and if you mess with it you may cause other problem. They may have have to remap and have them check E.T. sensor mind was loose and Reset the AFV. There some learn function mech will have to do.
My dealer is one bigger one in Illionis they had to call buell.I have 2004 firebolt XB12R I had same problem last week. It all good now !!!!

As the bike breaks in (1200 miles on my 9, and it is still changing for the better with each ride), the fan will run less and less.

My tach is a little sticky, the needle sometimes will not sweep on "bike bootup", but everytime but once it pops up to work fine when the "paintshaker" gets turned on.

I had exactly one instance where the bike was running rough for a mile or two. The next time I rode it, it was perfect again, and has never come back. I think it was a fluke.

Might have been some metal from breakin on the speedo sensor. It can be pulled and replaced. There was a pretty major reliability issue with them previously, but the new bikes fixed this, and what you describe is not the speedo sensor death twitch anyway.

The factory wants a TPS reset at 1000 miles anyway, so that is cheap and easy step.

Speed sensor is a known issue on XB. My 2002 xb9s has been through 2 speed sensors within 6000m

DC, yep. To further specify; I spray around the intake manifold attachments: Manifold to each of the cylinders (intake ports), and manifold to carb/injector body. Haven't tried on an injected bike yet, so no personal experience there. My guess is it would be quite similar.

But you're right. Avoid spraying near the "real" intake path : )

speedo working good now. Idle still "floats" a little when you sit and blip the throttle. Other than that, I can't say there is anything wrong with the way it runs. I changed the oil at 500 last night. Maybe I'll take it to the dealer for a 1000 mile, and have them go through it. Will the TPS reset fix the AFV if it's outta whack? Fan didn't seem to run as much either last night. Man there was some crud on the drain plug though.

Glad to hear the speedo's fine, and I think it's good you changed the oil too.

The tps reset will not automatically reset the AFV. That is another setting. What is your idle set to? The hunting around can be due to idle set too high.

I would
-set the idle to ~1050 (but below 1100)
-Search for an intake leak as Henrik and DC said
-Have the tps and AFV reset by a dealer (or someone in your vicinity with a VDST )

I had the rpm hunting around thingy twice. The first time the dealer reset the TPS/AFV, the second time was after I switched to the race ecm and had my idle too high.

Right, "blip" isn't even the correct term on this bike. Gosh, I hope the dealer set the TPS/AFV when they installed the race kit. It idles around 1100 I think, I'll double-check. Wondering if I should change the gearbox too after seeing the engine oil.

I agree with Ingemar. Idle hunting seems to happen if the idle speed goes above 1100rpm. I just had to set mine again because of the hunting problem. Now it's set to idle between 1030-1070 rpm (throttle angle set at 4.8 degrees - reading from Technoresearch tool). When the TPS was reset at the dealer, it was at 5.5 degrees. Lowered the idle (throttle angle at 5.3 degrees) and was still hunting. Changed to 5.1 degrees, and still hunting. The hunting disappeared at 4.8 degrees, along with that nasty shake that occurred when the RPM stuck momentarily at 1800rpm. What's interesting is that the idle doesn't seem to vary that much between 5.5-4.8 degrees. But one thing I noticed is that the idle is very stable at 4.8 degrees (very little fluctation).

Speedo sensors were a problem on all tube frame bikes, and the early XB9r bikes. The XB9s bikes were all fine, and I would be suprised if the 2004 and up xb9r bikes still had the problem.

It was a number of issues, the main one being the supply voltage being unregulated and unfiltered. Not all bikes had the problem, but the problem bikes would likely be serial killers.
