Ok, I'm been lurking here posting bs posts for long enough. It's time to start posting like I own a bike and not wishing I did. Well, I'm at that point now. I live in Central Florida so I'm willing to go to dealers from the east coast of Central to about 1 hour from Tampa. So if anyone in those areas knows of a sweet deal let me know. Also, insurance, I want to know where and how much, also with who. Allstate is kinda raping me right now on an 11 year old bike for only liability and bodily injury ($600 every 6 months) and my driving record is spotless.

Anyways, onto my question. I'm still out on what style bike to get. I love the XBR's but that City X is growing on me. I want to know how people feel about the power difference between a 9 or 12. I've test rode both but can't make up my mind. How's the reliability between the 9 and 12 also? That is the biggest factor. Are there any hard numbers out that can tell how many of each have had problems. Give me the low down here if you can. Personal experence is a big plus also. (I do not want to hear about the old tube frame models. Only the XB series.)

I'm in sorta the same boat as you - my financing just came through - Capitol One Auto Finance had the best rate on a 60 month loan - I got 6.84% APR - HD's lender offered 10.9%. Best insurance quote came from Progressive - paying just over $400 a year for 20/40, 15 full coverage 1k deductible col/other. Shopped around on the insurance and Geico wanted $1900 - said they were the best deal out there (hah!).

Anyway - thinking about getting the XB9SX but I'm not comfortable paying MSRP in this market - HD's sales were down 9% for Q3 '04 and they should be more flexible to move product. Does anyone have a figure on what dealer invoice is on the XB9SX?

I say go for the 9 but that's up to you... I love mine and probably wouldn't trade for a 12 either.

As for insurance, give Dairyland a try at a quote. They're doing me right at $630 a year for full coverage and their service after my accident was great.

Not sure what DEALS they have but Gainesville Harley gave me a great price quote. And after my 1st service I can say with complete confidence their service dept is the best!!

I,ve owned my XB9SX for almost 2 months now and I don't have a single regret. In fact I just got back into town from being at Daytona's Biketoberfest and I had the time of my life blasting all over that place! I have to admit I felt that I might have been happier if I had chosen the XB12R so I took the opportunity to ride one at the Buell demo by the race track. I loved the power but hated the handling. Buell uses A track of road that runs behind the raceway for their rides, it was a breeze on my City X but a bear on the XB12R. This is no reflection on the XB12R rather it was a reflection of my inexperience with that style of bike. For me the City's neutral riding position was just easier to have fun on. Having said that I am seriously considering dropping in a big bore conversion sometime in the future.

Incidentally while I did see a number of XB's running around Daytona I felt I was the only City X outside of the demo group.

As for Insurance I'm with Illinois National Insurance CO. I pay $600 a year for full coverage.

Bb13, where were they doing those demos at Biketoberfest? I was there but didn't see any. Course, I never got near enough to Daytona Harley.

Barnett HD in ElPaso,TX is adverting 2003 XB9S for $7999. http://www.barnetthd.com/specials.htm
There are probably equal or better deals at other dealers. Just check around.

I came from a tuber 12 (M2), which probably had just about all the bottom end of an XB12, but not the top end.

I do miss it the low end a little after going to the 9sx, but the 9 XB engine makes up for it in other areas. If I could do it again, I would... well... do it again. Absolutely.

The 12 does more and is better on paper, but by the time you figure in the different gearing, the higher insurance, the (I suspect) lower reliability, the higher cost, etc, I think the difference is a wash, and you should buy whichever best fits your personality.

That 12 motor is a great motor, but the 9 motor has a great personality as well. This ain't no 883 vs 1200 type thing... both motors have their place.

And keep in mind that Aaron or Pammy could likely take your 9, and for not a ton more then you would have paid extra in the first place, turn it into an engine that is (*ducking*) much better then the stock XB12. Not because Aaron and Pammy know anything Buell does not, but because they can work with fewer constraints.

IMHO. All I know for sure is that I *really* like my 9sx.

Insurance wise just how bad do these bikes come out in it between the 9 or 12? I'm eyeballing the R but might consider the City X just because it looks darn nice.

It probably varies wildly between companies and markets. My position was that the S are the streetbikes, and the R are the race oriented bikes (one way my insurance company made the price cuts) and then that I was running under 1000cc (which was another price cut).

I have a good record and a good relationship with my agent though. Others have quoted reasonable rates on the 9's, but scary prices on the 12's. YMWV (Your Milage WILL Vary).

Another, when you say the 12 is less reliable, what things have happened to make it that? I've read about some with engines going but others with no problems. Not trying to start a flame war here, just trying to educate myself a little more in my decision process. Well, off to a local HD to ask some more questions on price.

Both the 9 and the 12 XB's are likely VERY reliable, don't get me wrong.

I am guessing though, long term, the 9 will prove to be marginally more reliable. It has to dump less heat. It has a shorter stroke engine. It sees less peak stress then a long stroke (12) engine. I think the 9 may have a slower piston speed then the 12 as well. There are a few less parts to break (interactive exhaust).

Nothing that is a huge deal, just lots of little incremental stuff, statistically very minor.

HD of Ocala has several CityX models on display, price is $7,999 (expect to pay $500 setup). They also have a 05 12S for $8,500 and two or three Firebolts (didn't notice the price or size).

I have only had the 1K service on the CityX so I can't judge the Buell service expertise. They have treated me right and seem very Buell friendly.

If you want sales info, talk to Tommy who is the "Buell salesman".

The only consistent complaint i've read here about the xb12, is with the race Ecm install.
