Thanks Phelan and Greg_e, awesome info. I'll look into all of it....I had heard about the fuel pump cross reference with a Mustang, and my '03 does make a bit of racket. The '05 is considerably quieter, and seemed faster....suppose that could be the issue......two ways to get more fuel in; increase pulse width or turn up the pressure.

Thanks again guys....love to hear from anyone else....I firmly believe this thread will benefit others as well. I love this site.

I understand wanting to do a thing for its own sake but it would be just so much easier to get a 1125.
I remember when they came out that someone superimposed an XB12 dyno on top of a 1125 graph and they lined up pretty perfectly until the XB hit redline.
The 1125 just kept going up at the same slope til its own much higher redline.

I think they top out north of 150Hp quiet muffler and all.

The 03 does not use a pulse width on the fuel pump, it just runs and has an intank pressure bypass regulator. So getting more pressure needs a different regulator.

When the pump is making a lot of noise, it's time to replace it.

Greg - yeah, you guys got me thinking on the fuel pump. Now I know it's a gearotor pump like GM used In the early days of fuel injection (mid 80s). Apparently, so did Ford... There is only three ways to get more fuel in there....
1. Change the injectors to a higher lb or rate
2. Increase fuel pressure in the high side to push more fuel each time the injector fires/opens
3. Increase the pulse width, or duration that the injector is on.

A weak fuel pump would starve the motor for fuel......and you would think, max out the pulse width in the fuel tables to compensate. I'm certain there are pressure tests to verify pump condition/integrity, or perhaps review using ECMSpy. Haven't plugged it in yet, hoping to find some time to check it out and re-acclimate myself. It's been a while....

I'm going to spend some cycles this weekend figuring out the fuel pump parts/situation/approach you mentioned up above. Out of curiosity - anyone ever notice a power difference after changing one?

Nate a much to my wife's chagrin, I would buy a third Buell - an 1125 - if I could find one I liked that wasn't in Texas. I still like the charm of the XB, and the geometry is part of the charm....so is that elusive 6th gear...

I can say that I have ridden 1125s, and maybe it's just that the ones I rode were at 6000 ft, where I reside, but none of them got away from me or really impressed me, other than a decent big end. The 90" is a far more visceral and s$%&-grinning machine, without sounding like a box of rocks are bouncing around. And that's an apples to apples comparison, as both were ridden at 6000 ft. I can't imagine what the 90" will be like once the owner gets it back to Illinois, at ~100 ft.

At least the fuel pump replacement is cheap, I think $125 will get the job done unless the pump went up in price.

Phelan - thanks, I agree. Still like to ride an 1125 someday, to see what it's all about.

Greg - Dude......not helping...... I don't like the black/blue.....I would want the white with blue wheels......or the red with black, but I don't need you combing Craigslist around NY for me, that's how I got the second XB9R. Almost every day I fire up Craigslist in Albany and type "Buell" in the search box. I may need to find 'alternate living arrangements' if I bring home a third of Erik's creations

Is the new fuel pump Buell OEM or the mustang retrofit and regulator any quieter - like manufacturing improvement/refinements were made? I think what I've heard most say is the noise you hear if fuel pushed thru the regulator, not actually the pump. True?

The pump gets loud before it fails. Hard to hear my new pump running. Not trying to scare you into an immediate repair, but if you do any other work, replace the pump. Hardest part is getting the swingarm out of the way.

This seems like the right answer, no?

Wonder if slaughter will have time to weigh in on the 1169. I'm still thinking about that 90ci motor Phelan built. Phelan - have you had an opportunity to ride an 1190 variant? Wonder how that compared. Also, what HP/TQ number that 90" came up with an how that plots again the stock curve, an 1125 which I understand is similar, and the 1190.

It's cheap, but never heard of the brand. You'll still need a new high pressure filter, but that's like $5.

I'm hoping to have it dyno tuned in the next week or so and then get some more seat time on it. I've was laid waste a few days ago by some sort of bug, and been completely exhausted since. Recovery is taking a lot longer than I'd like.

Just to threadjack a little bit, the ADK rally in Lake George is this weekend, I'll be bringing my 1190SX, and you are all welcome to take it for a hot lap.
