I have been hearing about people doing their own exhaust... I work in a fab shop and am pretty sure that I have all the tools it takes to cut it open and weld it back up but am not sure what to do once I get it opened up... Plus I do not want to screw up the motor so want some advice please.

Thanks,
Tbone

As far as i know, and witnessed, any mod (besides drummer) hurts lowend torque

If you want to just make it louder

Just did mine with my girlfriends dad. HE had his ideas and I had mine. I went to the store and he used a torch to cut it open. Big mistake. Use a cutting wheel or a air powered cutting tool. Alot of people say to do an H pattern on the top of the muffler and open it like a casket, don't. Cut the end cap right behind the stock tip off with a chop saw, then cut completely through again on the rear tire side of the jacking point line. Toss that section (including the stock mufffler tip) in the trash. Then cut horizontally along the sides of the muffler but leave the chin fairing mounting points on the bottom half. Once you can see inside. use a hammer to slide the muffler (there is one inside the muffler) off the pipe that comes from the header.
Buy a cheap straight through muffler and gut it for its core and stainless packing and weld it in and put the packing in, or weld in a glass pack. Cut a hole the end plate from your first cut for the exit of your pipe. Weld on cool tip or boring tip like me. weld it so it doesn't shoot to the rear tire. Wire brush or what ever you have to get old paint off, grind down the new welds to make it look nice, paint or ceramicoat and fire it up.

Or buy a drummer. Or do both. I want a drummer but I like building stuff too. did the glass pack way cuz I was in a hurry, going to do the other way with a the guts of a magnaflow soon, and hopefully somebodies girlfriend will be getting me a drummer for x-mas.
Hope this helps.

Tbone, this is the way i did it.mark across muffler 7'' from back.cut through with hack saw.remove centre pipe.cut 1st & 3rd pipes back enough so u can join up with 1-3/4'' perf tube.bend perf so it connects up to 1st & 3rd pipes.expand perf at one end so it goes over exit pipe.align perf into place & tack weld to 1st pipe.pack both ends with stainless wool packing.align both ends together & weld.using abrasive flap disc in 4'' grinder, linish weld & paint with flat black heat proof paint.

or you could make new muffler like i did.

Tbone:
I simply sawed the end cap off of mine with a band saw, then removed a section of the crossover tube that you see when the cap is removed. It sounds awesome! I agree it does neuter the bike below about 3500, but it will still stand the front end up going into second gear. I hear the drummer is a great way to go, but I spent $20.00 on my mod as opposed to the $400 for the drummer. It truly is all personal preference! Have fun!

Tbone,i suggest if u are going to modify original muffler, might as well do it properly.once it's done,it's done!

Buell Boy: What exactly do you qualify as "properly" is that as in welding, etc?

Vegas,my suggestion to Tbone is that the mod i did to my pipe didn't loose any torque nor did it make it ridiculously loud.on idle it was not much louder than standard but when in full swing, sounds great.as for the word properly, see dictionary

boy_beau... thanks for the description of your mod. Did you ever try it on a dyno? How did your homebrew exhaust turn out?

Ok did the dyno run, xb9r k&n drilled air box, race ecm and a hand made muffler (glass pack version). The tech told to expect lower numbers than what other people are getting on the bike. Said something about an honost dyno blah blah blah. I figured ok, maybe the hp numbers in the high 70's or low 80's then. Ran the dyno, and ended up in the high 50's. A high of 58.5.
Interesting. Anyways the graph looked good. No dips in the torque or hp curve anywhere. Air fuel good up to 5 grand and then leans out. 6500 really lean. Anyways, started asking about if new injectors might help... maybe, maybe not. Would only help if stockers were maxed out. Unlikely. The other two options are remapping the ecu. As of yet not possible. And the last option is a new cam and valve springs incase there is any or too much overlap where there is oxygen flying straight through and registering at the 02 sensor. But that would probably show an hp drop there.
So I plan on purchasing another stock exhaust and dyno with that. get numbers to compare it too, post those. and then get a drummer too.
I want a drummer.
Booms more than mine. love that. Good job kevin.
And then dyno and post that.
Probably gonna get the injectors as well. Maybe sunday. Dyno monday.
Any ideas out there....

Well I was planning on using the bmw injectors. I think they are about 60 bucks a piece or so. But the local dealer said a week to get them in. racingmotorcycles has their injectors for 281. Hmmm I say the bmw ones for now. Although there is that remap for the buell race ecu. Now I wonder if thats for the race ecu we all can get at the dealer or if that is for the fully programmable ecu that you can only get if you are racing the things, or however that all goes...
I would love just to be able to program the ecu and lean it out alittle at 3000 and richen it up after 5000. The techlusion box is out there, but I hate the idea of piggy back boxes that need to be replaced every 3 or 4 years.
So, I will see. Does anyone know anything about that programming done by racingmotorcycles.com?
Anyone put the 1150 injectors on their buell yet?
