Already posted this topic once today, but it disappeared somehow... So, I'll tell the story once more: shortly before Christmas I came across this '09 XB12Scg. Asking price was 7500 with 6k miles on the ODO. Not bad considering that earlier Lightning models with far more miles sometimes go for the same price round these parts (The Netherlands).

I already own an X1 Lightning, an XB12X and an M2 Cyclone (well, had an M2). I decided to trade in the M2 because well... the upkeep and the hassle in keeping all these bikes running is just too much for one guy without a real and well stocked garage. I can store them inside thankfully, don't worry about that. Anyway, the M2 was developing some problems (leaking base gaskets - which usually means the cylinders are on their way out, right?) and the transmission was stiff as all hell and I was done pouring money into that thing. Seemed wiser to upgrade to one of the late model bikes with the new and improved engine.

Here it is:

What do you guys think?

Was wondering about the headlight grill and rubber x on the airbox cover though. Thought only the SX models had these items, not the Scg's. Or was that an option for these bikes as well?

Anyway, first thing to get sorted is a small service. The oil hasn't been changed since '11 according to the service manual. And it needs a proper exhaust and remapping.

Anything else I should look at?

Looks great. I'm guessing the grill and X were added, or the bodywork was swapped, as like you said they are not stock.

Yeah that's what I thought. I noticed yesterday that the dealer where I bought it was offering a blue airbox cover without the rubber x and I had already been eyeing the grill with some suspicion. Kinda lame they didn't offer me the proper cover in the first place. But whatever. I'll buy it off them and remove the grill.

Wow, that is a fantastic looking bike!

Thanks man!

A free spirits sprung tensioner will give the output shaft needle roller bearings and rear wheel bearings an easier time. An output shaft lube plug will let you lube the outer needle roller bearing. If this fails it's full engine strip to replace this. Keep the oil changes frequent as on the xb's with the later shaped cam cases there are no cam bushes. The cams run directly in the main case / cam chest. Other than that it's lovely looking bike. Love the hero blue wheels with the black frame / black engine

And here I was thinking I had actually acquired an improvement with the new engine :P.

Will look into this, but it sounds absolutely dire, haha.

By strip, do you mean split cases or?

Yes. Engine out and cases split. If a dealership does this it's mega bucks. This is the link to what we do to counter this here in the UK http://www.ukbeg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=74 2 our local Buell specialist turns them up. They're 10 plus postage. Last time I sent one to the USA I think it was 3.50 ish untracked 8.00 tracked. I'm not sure what the current exchange rate is. If you can't source one locally and want one sent I will post one.

Yes in order to get at the tranny, you have to strip the engine right down like a jap bike.
The only things you can get to on an XB are the primary, clutch, alternator.

If you're really terrified of the tight belt, just drill the stock tensioner mount holes a bit larger.
Or put 10,000 Km on it and the belt will loosen up.

great looking bike ! I love the translucent blue palstics
it should give you many miles of happy riding.

seeing as how its in such great condition, i'd be tempted to keep it as-is and just ride it. the SCG's are supposed to be the best riding/handling of all the buell models

Nothing wrong with the cams running without bushings. And The stock tensioner is usually not an issue. My Uly ran fine for 70,000 miles with the stock tensioner without killing the output shaft bearing. I killed the output shaft myself being stupid.

Hmm, while I am all for taking certain preventative measures, I think I'll take my chances on this one. Prefer not to start drilling holes in a perfectly good bike : D.

It's at 10k now, will inspect how tight the belt is.

Yeah, as I've said the only things I plan to do right now are a stage 1 kit, put back original blue plastic airbox cover (with the original SCG cover instead of the SX cover it has now), remove the SX grill, replace the mirrors with bar-ends and maybe tidy up the tail a little bit (by replacing it, not by putting a saw to it).

That bike looks fantastic.

Thank you!

Still haven't ridden it since the purchase actually. A lot of salt remains on the roads sadly. Have had a couple of days of rain now though and it's dry tomorrow afternoon. Might be a good window for a little test ride.

Don't want to take it too far however since the current oil has been in the bike for over 6 years I reckon. Want to take care of that first.

Also ordered Twin Motorcycles new Torque Hammer pipe, the dual outlet one (with a proper mapping). Will try to post a video of how it sounds once it's on there.

Thanks, tried to take some good ones : )

Thank you! Can't seem to find the mirrors on ebay though. 'Turano', that's what they're called?
