Well I guess a servo emulator may be my next project on the xb12. Just put a Ti Jardine on the bike. I checked and the Jardine and all brackets was over 12 pounds lighter than the stock exhaust and brackets (not figuring in the servo motor). Surprisingly it did make the bike noticeably easier to turn-in and a little quicker handling. I guess if you think about it I probably lost a little stability because the weight was down low, but I'll take it and the bike is plenty stable with the damper anyway.

I must say it's pretty loud when you get on it now, but I am kind of liking the pop pop pop on deceleration. Sounds a lot like pop corn popping It's kind of fun running up on some rice rockets, decelerating into a corner (popapoppoppoppop) and knowing you are rattling them

The pipe definitely added character to the bike and I've noticed a lot more approving looks and double-takes in traffic.

As for power, it's about what I expected, a little less in the low mid-range with a stronger pull from about 3500 and strong on top (as in watch out for the rev limiter).

On the down-side the chin fairing brackets are pretty crude, although a new design will be out in a couple of weeks. For those running the old bracket, watch out for oil filter clearance. The right side bracket was adjusted to high on mine and cracked the bottom of my oil filter (luckily that happened after my Palomar mountain ride and only in the last few blocks from home and I noticed it after I shut the bike off)

Also I'm not sure having the exhaust dump onto the side of the rear tire is a good idea, so I may modify the outlet at a later date.

Many thanks to Al Lighton, his wife (Joanne?) and American Sportbike for supplying the Jardine BTW. Great people, great service. It's the kind of thing that reminds me of why I bought a Buell, not some product of a giant faceless company.

Congrats on the new pipe.

But I don't get the servo motor emulator.. does that refer to another topic I missed? Whats it do?

The idea is to make a little circuit that tricks the ECM into thinking the motor is functioning. There have been several threads on this topic.

XBolt, you could try this barely tested cct (at your own risk), I've done about 180 miles and hit the rev limiter twice with it, no check engine light, yet...

Opto... why the 1k resistor and the connection from +12V? Does the sensor need some bleed current when it is supposedly "open"? If thats the case, why not just slap a resistor across the collector and emmiter of the transistor and leave off the need for the 12V connection?

Not being critical, just curious...

Why not just leave it in? Disconnect the cables and be done with it.

Hey people buy expensive carbon fiber to save 1/2 lb, so why keep something I dont need if I can replace it with a few dollars worth of components.

I don't need a race ECM-I have a TFI.

Reep, the Control wire has to sense a voltage (power supply) to the actuator or the light will come on immediately.

BadS1, there are lots of uses for the space occupied by the actuator, and some of us are still running stock ecms - you know why, not going there again!

Were are the guys who are using the F.A.S.T. System putting the servo motor?? Or better yet, where are you guys who are using an air box eliminator putting the servo motor??

I wanna my servo motor off so I can utilise a better induction system. I don't want the race ECM, once again we won't go there. I will use the new TFi and tune the bike for the exhaust and induction mods.

I agree!

For those who want to keep it stock, that's cool too, but one reason I didn't buy a rice rocket is because I am a gear head and I like the challenge of getting more out of a bike and doing it myself.

Good one Opto.Now make sure when you need get the CONDOM'S out of your air box that you bring a T27 with ya so you can get them out.That would be funny,wait a minute babe there bolted under here and I forgot my tool kit.LOL BTW I don't know if I'd ride with someone that needs to store beer in there bike for riding.If its that important to you do you think one beer is enough??Hell go for the gusto get yourself a Camelback.LOL

Opto,

After looking a your circuit (thanks) I have a couple of questions:

1: Is the ECM actually holding the Hall Sensor line high until the sensor in the motor sinks it to ground (just asking because I though I need the sensor line to be at 5V when the control signal is at ground)?

2: If the above is true, are there any concerns about sinking too much current through the sensor line and frying the ECM / and or the transistor? A simple fix would be a resistor on either the collector or emitter to limit current.

3: I assume you are operating the transistor at saturation so it switches, not amplifies. Is that transistor ok running like that with no biasing to keep it stabalized (ie: avoid thermal run-away)?

Not criticizing at all, just trying to get a better understanding of both the Buell circuit and how yours will interact (based upon my very distant memory of transistor theory).

1.Yes the ecm holds the sensor line at 5V unless the actuator grounds it.
2.There could be concerns, but it is a "sensor" line so it doesn't have to drive anything. I measured 0.005V on that wire with the actuator connected to the ecm, ignition on, engine not running. A 1K resistor will not pull the 5V to ground, I tried it.
3. You assume correct and it hasn't blown up yet. Good point, but I'm not worried too much since the actuator pulls the 5V down to 0.005V.

I'm not a design engineer so the questions are welcome, I don't mind answering them. I am going riding again this weekend, will let you know if the check engine lamp comes on. I feel a little bit confident with this cct as I tested it on the bike and know that the sensor line is going high with the control low and vice-versa.

Thanks opto. You have saved me a fair amount of work.

Check out my funny idea on this thread: More exhaust mods for a 12... I think I have a funny but possible idea for a good use of the servo motor and cable (switch actuated exaust cutout).
Of course it would need a modified version of your circuit to keep the ECM happy.

Oh, one more question: Not sure what you meant by 1k02 for the resistor value?

1K2 equals 1200 ohms. (They use the K like a decimal place over here.)

I've had a few PM's regarding the circuit I posted so there is a bit of interest out there, yes it does work, some of the PM's are from riders who aren't confident in making it themselves (which is quite understandable), maybe someone out there with enough spare time and capabilities would like to fabricate this and sell it (I'm talking pocket money here) for those who want to buy one ready-made and plug it in. The design is free. It would sell in very small quantities and be of service to XB12 owners.
