I recently purchased a used 2008 Ulysses XB12X. I've had it for a week and already know more about it then the owner of several years. According to him he did not do anything with the ECM. I have read there are improvements with the most updated ECM (people seeing better performance). From my research the most recent stock ECM is from 2007. If that is correct and my Ulysses is 2008, does this mean I have the most up-to-date flash of the stock ECM?

Basically, do I already have the best performance possible with the most current ECM flash, aside from finding me a racing ECM? I want to know whether there is a newer/better ECM version that would improve over what would be stock in my 2008 XB12X?

Thanks
Lyu

From what I'm reading, you're going to want to get an ECM from here: http://idspd.com/xcart/products-buell/xb12

Start on page 2.

Nope. The 2007 and 2008 bikes have different fuel injection systems, and there were several ECM flashes available to work out some kinks in the fueling of early production models.

The latest flash (often called the 2010 flash) changes the fan operation. The reprogramming prevents the fan from coming on at low speeds and after you turn the key off, so if the fan is always running when you shut the bike off you have one of the old programmings.

A Buell dealer can reflash your ECM to the 2010 flash, it technically is free but you may get charged some labor.

Personally what I recommend is buying a Race ECM from EBR or IDS (they are the same thing, IDS made all Buell ECMs). The Race ECM bypasses EPA restrictions, so the bike starts easier and runs better.

Froggy you say Buell Dealer, how if Buell is out of business? I called 3 Harley Davidson shops in NYC area and all said they don't touch Buell's anymore.

Having the fan not go crazy would be nice but I'm more concerned with the throttle controls. Does my current ECM flash have the best/most current throttle data (not consider EBR ECMs of course).

Meaning was there only an update to the fan operation after the 08 ECM flash?

Can you recommend a place/mechanic in the NYC area (NJ, LI, etc works too)

Thank you Froggy

Harley closed their Buell division, but the dealer network still remains. Buell.com has a list.

I can't vouch for the dealers in Long Island, as I've heard nothing but horror stories, and Buell owners I know on the island don't get work done on the island. I can vouch for the service departments at Empire Harley in New Rochelle NY, Danbury Harley in Danbury CT, and Liberty Harley in Rahway NJ.

Regarding your throttle response, that will be affected by the reflash. Many parameters were tweaked over the years also including things like the idle, cold start enrichment, etc.

First thing I searched through the dealer network, 3 closest to me. 2 flat out said they can't touch a Buell and 1 was shaky about finding a guy. All 3 were listed on Buell's website, I thought I was in trouble. I'll definitely give those places a call. Appreciate all the info!

PS. Would you know anyone in the area who works on their own Buell. I'm reading the manual thoroughly and would like to learn to do things on my own as much as possible. It's a great source but hands-on is ideal, I like to manage all my own toys. A shop is great but I won't be able to work hand in hand and learn (liability issue I'm sure). Something like me helping them work on THEIR Buell for free or I'd even pay. Basically my free labor & an extra set of hands in exchange for their experience. Willing to travel anywhere NJ, NY, CT, PA or anywhere 3 hours within NYC.

Thanks
