Hello, Not sure if it's too much of an issue but found this little tear in my 03 XB9 belt today, its second hand and has about 18000 miles I'm not sure if it's had a belt change or not What do you think I should do, change it or leave it because it's only a little tear?  | ||

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it, but I would keep an eye on it as it will only get worse over time. I typically recommend replacing the belts at around 20k miles, so I'd just order one up and throw it on, keeping the old belt as an emergency spare. Do note that the 2003 models have a belt that is specific for that year, 2004+ bikes have a different belt and is not compatible without changing pulleys and other parts. | ||

I'd keep riding it, and pack a spare belt for a long trip. (Which is the same advice I'd give if it didn't have that damage...) You could get a new one and use that one as a spare, the used ones pack and handle easier. If you want to gamble on not having a spare, that's not crazy either if you have a cell phone and coverage and somebody to pick you up. Even on the road, you can probably get a new belt in 2 or 3 working days fedex easy enough, so it might ruin a trip and cost you $150 in a cheap hotel, but won't be the end of the world. | ||

Seeing that, would freak me out. If mine, I'd replace the belt sooner than later. Additionally, I was going to say it's not "if" but "when" the belt will break; but that's the way it is even with a new belt. I would de-burr the pulley. | ||

Looking at your profile now, I see that you are in the UK, the Buell parts are more expensive and scarce than in the US, so I would get one on order, that way you are not down for possibly weeks waiting on it. | ||

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll buy a spare and either change it and hold this one or ride my luck for a while and monitor it. Yep, I'm in the UK and I'm struggling to find details about the belts on 03 XB9S', it all seems to be up in the air about upgraded belts and tentioners... I haven't got a manual to refer to (bike didn't come with it)... Does anyone know where I could get a definitive answer on what belt I need.... Where I could get an 03 XB9S manual .... Thanks! | ||

The part number for a 2003 belt is G0500.02A8R The service manual is 99493-03Y Also worth getting is the parts catalog, 99574-03YB As for where to get all the above, your local Buell dealer can order them up for you. I believe TwinMotorcycles.Nl will ship to you, but I do not know if the exchange rate is favorable vs buying at a dealer. Also, there are pirated copies of the manual and catalog floating around online, if you search for them you can easily find them. | ||
