What is the current state of XB replacement & maintenance parts?

I am considering picking up an 06 XB9SX, but I'm out of the loop.

The cast alloy parts and new body parts are crazy expensive if available!
the maintenance parts are still easy available ,but you have to know your supplier.

But there are also enough second hand parts!

parts are getting more expensive, but are still available and will be from other sources.

I've also bought parts and gasket sets from the dealer for my 'sportster' that I thought I had.
good thing they fit my Uly

what does it need or what parts are you worried about becoming unavailable?

Obtaining parts is just as easy/hard as it was a few years ago. Prices on some things went up, but availability and fulfillment times remains the same.

I actually worked with our friends at American Sport Bike and purchased a package or parts intended to keep the Ulysses on the road for another 20 years.

Al has identified certain critical parts that has already gone up wildly in price or likely will due to low probability of them being manufactured again.

My thinking was thus . . . .

I am going to put all the "Uly Survival Parts" in a shipping case. I'll use them only if I can't, at the time, get the part I need.

I may end up with a couple grand tied up but 7 years from now I'll be able to:

1) Part out the kit and make a handsome profit
2) Sell the kit intact and make a handsome profit
3) Sell the bike with a COMPLETE set of spares

Just one way of doing it . . . .

So what are the survival parts in that kit?

I'm thinking front and rear engine isolator
Headstock bearings.
Maybe a belt and a rear sprocket.

Headstock bearings are unique, but they can be replaced by HD tapered roller bearings, which are easily available and cheap, if someone desires.

I guess I'm worried about wear parts.

With my old XB's I went through a few belts, a few clutch cables, wheel bearings...

Wheel bearings are a dime a dozen. Clutch cables can be custom made inexpensively. Belts are tricky, but can be inexpensively converted to a chain.

Yep belts are the only wear part I am worried about long term, everything else has a solid aftermarket. There are some aftermarket belts out there, but none that I've seen with enough data on to trust.

And isolators. No aftermarket for XB isolators out there. At least the tubers are covered in that regard.

I wouldn't want an XB with a chain.

The belt drive is one of things I like most about XBs.

The belts are all Goodyear, got to be a common enough part to get it direct.

HD has exclusivity contracts on belts, at least I know they did with Gates. Maybe that's changed though.

Well, we know that Erik liked to use ready made parts when possible, so what Harley models use the same size belt?

The only belt that crosses between Buell and HD is the tuber belt G0500.8 to the 40022-91. All the other belts are the wrong size and or can't bend backwards around the idler pulley.

probably the Kevlar fibers that allow the belt to handle shock loading and being bent backwards.
I've tried (and others have too) to source the cog belt from a few industrial suppliers, but got nowhere. HD must have it stopped at the source

Seems like they shouldn't be able to do that, especially if they are going to be selling that part anymore.
