Any of you guys have this happen? My bike has 550 miles on it, and the strap snapped, at the middle, during a high speed ride (6,000 rpm cruising).

The motor runs great with the race kit, but I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. I got rid of my X1 and M2 because of this kind of thing.

My dealer ordered the strap under warranty, but I'm using 2 LARGE hose clamps for now.

Interesting... I think that's the first one I've heard of on an XB...

Somebody over tightened it when the race muffler was put on.

Never heard of it either. Hmmm. Could you have unknowingly scraped a rounded curb (or some other obstruction) and put a weak spot in the strap?

This is the 2nd one I've heard of.
Both of those as well as this one had the race muffler added.
Guess we gotta RTFM for torque specs.
At least it's getting replaced free.
Just make sure you tell 'em not over do this one.

did you notice the instruction which came with the race kit requiring replacement of the muffler straps? someone likely ignored that step, and then overtightened the strap(s). might as well sell the bike, maybe you can get $4000 for it, since its almost new.

I feel the torque specs in the FM for the straps are way too high for a mechanical arrangement equivalent to a worm gear drive, no way I would torque them that high. I think they made a mistake on the front strap's torque at least. 10 ft-lb on that arrangement is scary.

I guy in our club with a 12S had his front muffler strap snap last month. It also had a dealer-installed race kit on it. The good news is we were headed to a dealer open house, they had a strap in stock and fixed it in about an hour under original warranty.

My dealer installed my race kit and ignored the instructions that mandated replacing the straps and Torca clamp. When I pointed this out, he said they've never had one fail, so they don't bother. He did say that if I had any problems, they would take care of it. I suspect it's more of a liability issue because if it was a real problem, the kit would probably come with the new parts.

Opto - I agree with you completely. I just put mine on last night using a torque wrench. The spec. calls for the front to be twice as tight as the rear. No way is this correct. The rears are quite tight as it is. I partly crushed my muffler's front last night and I never got close to that front torque value.

My muffler is not the original shape either because it wasn't close to the torque specs also. 18K later, the clamp hasn't broken. Anyone know the part number? Just curious as to the price.

Screw that, when you get the bike back, loosen and re-torque everything yourself.

Honestly, if you can figure out how to mount it, run a third hoseclamp in the center as a redundant.

Good idea. On the re-torque.
On the third strap, there's nowhere to put it IIRC.
I'm sure someone will correct me if needed.

I had the same thing happen after 20000 miles if it was over torqued I think it would have broke before that many miles.I had replaced all a month before the Ridge Run.I have 2 extra that are the same for the rear the front I don't sorry ,but I rode for several weeks with the 2 rear only it was just fine.Early next week I should get a check for a new bike and I hope to buy my bike back as long as the ins. don't try to rip me off they asked if I was going to fix and retitle the bike I said no just for parts for a track or stunt bike hoping they might not stick it to me.We'll see what happens!!!All the extra on my bike will be replaced also.So when I get my new bike I'll also get a check for my wheels, seat ,sliders, wind screen, race kit,12r air box. It's going to be like santa is coming early !!!!!!!!!My ins. company is checking into the leather not sure if it's in the policy.

Yeah, mine broke a day after my last track day in August. We looked it over and decided it wouldn't hurt anything to keep riding it. BTW, my bike has a DRUMMER which was installed when the bike was almost new. It requires quite a bit of work to install it for what it is, so I'm having the dealer install it (warranty) at the 10,000 mile service which is coming up soon.
