I'm sure this has been rehashed a million times, but here's 1 more: What part do I need to get to "improve" the breathing of my 03 XB9SL? Lots of talk about the XB12 airbox cover... Anyone have a part# of what I should get? Maybe a comparison pic of the two? Anyway my XB9SL has a Pro Series Kit and as always want to "eek out" any additional HP that can be added easily... TIA Sean... Still learnin' this XB9 stuff... | ||

Common wisdom is to pull the snorkel (rubber tube that points down through the frame into the scoop). Don't confuse this with the velocity stack (rubber cone sticking up from the engine intake). Snorkel out, velocity stack stays. Then switch to the 12 airbox, a quick and easy mod. My 9sx came with the 12 airbox from the factory, so even Buell is doing it this way now. There is a pretty big pocket in there where the 12 server controller would normally sit, it's begging to store *something* in there. | ||

Another common mod is to remove as much of the upper airbox as you can. Most people are drilling multiple holes in it and some are just leaving the required amount of material to be able to attach it to the lower airbox. It also gives the intake a nice mean sound. Another way to go about it would be to cut everything off the upper box except to top itself where it seals to the filter and find a way to attach it to the filter. Most people are using a few long bolts and a few holes. The people who have the stock 12 with the exhaust valve controller can just leave that bit of foam and controller in and it should make a good pressure seal once the airbox cover is replaced. This wouldn't work for you unless you cut up a peice of foam or something to fill the spot to make the pressure fit... | ||

Are there any dyno charts around that show performance gains for the XB12 airbox cut up or drilled vs. an unaltered one on XB9's? Mike. | ||

Xb9er, there is somewhere. Buckinfubba posted the difference between the 9 & 12 air box and Keith has the difference between a stock 9 box and one drilled out, on his thread in the tale section here | ||
