Well, I took the first step this weekend and modified the stock pipe. I opened the can and partially took out the back crossover. (I think Dyna and some others did this??) One of the Badwebbers sent me some pics on what he did, so I gave it a shot. It sounds like a cross between a pi$$ed off sportster and an old Kawa KZ. It basicly neutered the bike below 3500, but once you pass through 4000 it is an absolute beast! It will still wheelie hard going into second gear with the right clutch/rpm combination. I took it into the mountains yesterday, all the way up to about 10000 feet, and have no complaints at all. The biggest thing was taking it out onto the highway and running it for the run to allow the ECM to readjust. I may at some point go with the race ECM to get all the bottom end back, but for now, I am one happy camper!

Nice! I know several people that have done that mod.

Best part is that it sounds good and you save some money.

Vegas,

I would also like to make some modifications to my existing pipe. Don't have the available funds to buy and aftermarket pipe at this time. Please share photos of the mods that you made, or direct me to where I can get them.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe:
I am trying to locate the pics here on BadWeb again. As soon as I do, I'll grab them and repost them.

I did that to my stock can.
I did not like the results.

I thought the bike lost lots of power.
I couldn't roll on wheelie's like before.
maybe i just wasn't aggressive enough...
i changed everything after that, (pipe ,airbox, ecm)
runs mucho bettera now!

Why would you want to sacrifice any of the bottom end for a little power on top???I'd leave it stock before that mod.Seen that mod a year and half ago and its not worth it just my 2 cents.

Guys... I guess, like everything Buell, it's a matter of personal wants and preference. I never really worry about rolling on a wheelie, however I can still snag a good one going into second. I don't drag race red light to red light, so I don't worry a whole lot about bottom end. The bike just has to be ridden more like a ricer now. I kept the stock pipe, just in case I do get the urge to go back again. Who knows, I might someday buy a Drummer. I enjoy experimenting. Isn't that what this is all about anyways? When I get some more play money, I am going to do the airbox and the ECM. Maybe I'll like them, maybe they will end up on eBay!

Tools: here is the link for the instructions:

Now, I didnt cut out the whole crossover pipe, only a portion of it. I spent $100 on a spare stock pipe, and $20 for a local muffler shop to weld it back up. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, and above all, have fun with it!

Dana: you have a 12 though right? I have heard that it wasn't really worth doing on the 12's because of their pipe setup.

This has been discussed way before the 12 ever came out.And the 12 performs great with a pipe on.I've done the Drummer and now the D&D with great results from both.

Dana: Any preference between the Drummer and the D&D? (not fishing for a sponsor plug here)

Man I'll tell ya I've been asked that alot as of late. The Drummer is truly good but its a way better 9 pipe then a 12 pipe but it does do pretty good on the 12.Better then the race kit concerned. The D&D has a little more that I can tell. The midrange is a monster.
