Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question. 2007 Buell Ulysses. When I try to start, the starter just whirs, does not engage or turn over the motor. Initially it whirred and engaged, now just whirs. Battery seems ok", 12v, lights are bright and almost 200 cca. I tried jumper cables to a car battery with same result.

So I don't think it's the battery but not sure what to do.

Any clues/ideas?

Thanks!

-Marc.

Do you hear the hard hit of the bendex driving out?

check you battery again. a fully charged battery should be 12.7 volt and at 12 volt is considered dead.

No hard hit of the bended, it just spins. Shouldn't jumping from a car battery rule out a bad battery? Car has a fresh battery and I tried jumping with the car not running.

For you starter to turn your bendex is pushing the plunger out. It sounds like the starter clutch is getting hung up before it hits your ring gear. The easiest way to find out is to pull your primary cover watch the starter as you hit the button. If the starter clutch is going all the way out and engaging the ring gear and the starter is spinning without the engine turning most like you starter clutch is bad.

Yeah, sure sounds like starter clutch, I had to replace mine at about 15K miles. No amount of battery power is going to fix that. Have you had problems starting recently? Mine was kind of hit or miss for almost a month before it gave up completely.
