so I bought an xb12r last year not running and planned to fix it up in to something descent. I bought a new ecm changed the plugs and wires and got it running. Ideled great after I played around with it for a bit.The bike threw a few codes at first but i think it was mostly me playing around with it and having a couple sensors not plugged in. I took the bike for a ride and it didnt throw any codes on the ride, however the bike rode like shit which I suspect is the cam position sensor because i give it gas and the tach says the rpm's are increasing but the engine is dieing out. I decided to do a tps reset because im sure it needed that aswell. Now the bike wont run at all it will start and the rpm's will sit around 1000 and than die in roughly 1 second. my question is why would it idle fine before and than not at all after a tps reset, thats all i did, I didnt mess around with anything else.

If you did the TPS reset wrong, the computer will be very confused.
I suggest you carefully go through the steps again just in case you flubbed one.

Why a new ecm for one? And TPS reset, make sure throttle is FULLY closed, you can feel the throttle plate unstick as you roll throttle on. What did you end up setting it at?

I bought a new ecm because someone told me that's where my problem was, I see now that it's not the problem. On the bright side I have an extra now...so I just went out and re did my tps reset and I made sure everything was good, and I defiantly did it right I followed the video on YouTube step by step. I also pulled my plugs and cleaned them and made sure my wires were tight. Still no luck. : (

Fuel pump, injectors, or maybe a bad ignition coil?

the coil is good the injectors are good and fuel pump is good,it idled perfect before i did a tps reset. im going to buy new wires just because there getting old,i put the wires off my dads bike on it last night because there new and it didnt change anything.it has brand new plugs in it. im stumped, i may just take it to the mechanic but i feel like thats losing the battle, i like to do the work on my bike myself.

CPS failure is not uncommon with that model year. I would open the cover and see if it looks damaged from the heat. If your tach does not agree with what you believe to be the actual motor RPM, then it could be a bad CPS.

No idea what the you tube tells you about reset, but if you do not make sure it is closed TIGHT reset will be off, and what are you resetting it to?
Dial tp down as you watch ecm spy screen, make sure throttle blades are tight, hit reset button in Spy, reconnect and set tp to about 5.7 or more so bike idles. Then rest idle when warm.

Are you sure the fuel pump I'd good, hook up to test gage and see what your getting, you'll need a 5/16 ford adapter. Another is test is pour a a 1/4 cup of gas fown it's throat and roll it over if it fires for a few seconds then your not getting sufficient fuel fromantic the pump.

hey guys thanks for the advice but i think I'm going to just take the bike to the shop i can't seem to figure out the problem. i put a new cam position sensor in it today and still no luck. new plugs new wires reset tps on 2 different ecm's it would run for roughly 2 seconds and than shut off ofter tips reset and now it just chugs once and awhile. pretty frustrated with this motorcycle at this point.

bikes going in on the 5th of aug so i will continue to tinker with it until than. the starter is spinning really quickly right now so i assume the oil is washed off the cylinder walls and it won't start due to low compression, it won't even do what it was doing before, starting and dieing. i hope the shop i take it to doesn't skin me alive.

Do a compression test.

Hi Canton577, I just went through all kinds of aggravation with my 2009 XB12 Firebolt with very similar symptoms that you explained I tested and tried different sensor's checked grounds etc. and finally found it was a bad e.c.m. I tried a different one I had and it now runs better than ever.
