My '06 Uly's (XB12X) check engine light went on and stayed on for the first time Wednesday. There's only 5500 miles on the ticker, so it hasn't had much use. Didn't have any noticeable drop in performance at all. Only noticeable difference is the exhaust sound. It sounded louder than it normally does, which I didn't mind one bit. Sounded kinda cooler. I suspect the exhaust servo is stuck open.

I read several former threads on how to check and make sure it is functioning. Don't have a problem with doing that.

My question is....will it hurt the bike in any way to ride it with the servo stuck open until the end of the 2015 riding season (live in Michigan--it gets put away in Oct/Nov)??? I'd rather wait until the off-season to dive into it, especially if I have to replace the servo.

One last question.....where exactly is the exhaust servo? In the airbox or in the exhaust??? If in the airbox, I would think it would be much quicker and easier to replace (if needed) and would more likely take that on now. If in the exhaust, I will want to wait until later this year.

It doesn't cause any harm to the bike to ride with a failed actuator, only "issue" with it being stuck open is a little less low end power, and a little more noise.

The servo is on top of the airbox. Simply remove the outer cover (the colored plastic piece that has the Buell emblems), and it will stare you right in the face. It is easy to replace, just expensive if you are buying new.

Thanks Froggy.

I have an ECM spy cable and disk that I bought a while ago and haven't had the need to use until now. I'm thinking of hooking it up and seeing if the cause of my CEL is indeed the exhaust servo so I don't continue riding the bike and risk damaging it due to some other possible malady (other than the stuck-open exhaust servo).

Is there a cliffnotes version Badweb post that describes how to easily hook it up and read the code? I'd be starting from scratch.

Yep you can use ECMspy to check the code, and if it does show that the actuator is the cause, you can disable the actuator function so at least you won't have a CEL until you fix it.

I'm trying to find a guide, but it is fairly self explanatory. Install the program. First time you run it, it will be in German. You click on the wrench icon to get into the settings, from there you can change it into English.

Connect the cable to your bike and computer, turn the key to on and kill switch to run. In ECMspy you will need to have it auto detect the port, then you can press the button to connect.

You will need to switch to "professional" mode to unlock all the options, then you can check the error codes and run diagnostics on the actuator. You can then disable the actuator function while you are in there.
