07 xb12r 20k miles

Been a tuff year on the motorcycling front for me. Not that I had my burgeoning motorcycle design/manufacturing, engineering firm shut down by a bunch of Indian sheisters but it's already June and I've yet to burn up the road.

Partly due to not having time to ride and also considering that until the other week the rear tire was showing cords from last season. I slap the new shoe on the back a week ago and now she won't fire. Last cranked in early March.

Replaced plugs, wires are only a year old. Took the front plug out and grounded it on the jug - hit the start switch - no arc. Ignition fuse shows continuity. Coil lead shows continuous power on middle receptor. I don't know how to test the relay.

My problem is that my mechanical aptitude hits a wall when it comes to anything dealing with electrical power. My reasoning has it boiled down to a bad coil. American Sport Bike has them for about 40 bucks.

Just trying to narrow down the diagnostics before I go a'purchasing (what, with American Sport Bike's shipping charges and...)

Any chance I've missed something?

Much thanks in advance

Check in your service manual. Your numbers may be different than the ones in my X-1 and '08 manuals. The resistance between the 2 low voltage terminals should be somewhere in the 0.5-0.7 ohms. Less is an internal short; more is an internal open.

Resistance between the high tension terminals should be somewhere in the 5.5K-7.5K ohms.

If so, the coil is probably good, and the problem is elsewhere. My first guess (emphasize guess) is the coil is not getting a signal to fire the plug(s). Bad wire, bad/loose connector or ground, the CPS decided to die (had that happen once in an fi car- ran fine when parked in garage but wouldn't start the next day).

Hope this helps, Dave

Thanks Ak

Hopefully I can find time to get the multi-meter out before the end of the weekend. To be sure - low resistance would be the pins that the lead plugs into and the high would be the output to the plug wires? Forgive me, I lost my manual in a move and have yet to DL a digital version.

I've looked over the wiring thoroughly and found no chaffing. I did NOT check for solid grounding of the coil itself (could be an issue - turned down the motor 2 years ago for a RB gasket change - could've worked loose) - if only it were that simple. I'd feel like a dufus (i am) for losing so much riding time.

CPS = cam pos. sensor?

thanks again

Still stuck

When I made the first post I did not have my USB cable to run ecmspy. Since then I've run the diagnostics on the coil, fuel pump and injectors. Everything checked out fine.

Based on the quick research I've done, it doesn't appear as though the bike would throw a CEL for a bad CP sensor. Any evidence to the contrary? I'd hate to throw a $167 part at it if that's not the problem.

Any further advice greatly appreciated.

While I'm not totally sure on this one, I think with many pick-up type sensors you can disconnect the sensor, put your voltmeter across the leads and read a small amount of voltage while cranking. Might be worth trying out.

You need to put a scope on it to see if it is switching between high and low.

I really wish we knew what part crossed to the CPS, they are cheap for cars.

Thanks for the input, gentleman.

I don't have an oscilloscope and doubt if I'll buy one for this purpose.

I'm completely convinced it is the CPS based on other symptoms I've read about. It was sometime around Nov. '14 that I last had it out and I recall it was seriously bogging down on WOT and even cut off on me completely at one point and only begrudgingly restarted. At the time, I chalked it up to old gas/dirty injectors, but I believe I know better now

Thanks again.

I think I've hit an electrical gremlin that I have not the time nor patience to sort out.

CPS was replaced - bike fired and idled fine. Weather was crap that day so I let it get to fan temp and cut it off. Great, I'll get to it after work week - warm it, change oil etc. then ride.

5 days later. No fire in front jug again. ECMspy showed "CPS Signal 5" in red block. I know I should google harder but a quick search only referred me to pg 22 of ecmspy manual. Couldn't find that.

Tonight I went in to the cluster of connectors fore of the drive pulley. A bit gunked-up from an RB gasket leak that went too long before being fixed. Blasted those with half a can of electric cleaner, aired it out for an hour or so - reconnect everything. --- No combustion in front cylinder.

At this point I'm considering all new connectors and a GOOD cleaning.

I don't think this could be a bad VR but now I'm wondering if the old CPS was even bad and perhaps it was a short elsewhere.

Perhaps someone that catches this thread would be interested in obtaining an 07 12R for the price of a decent scooter...

Thoughts? Thankful in advance for any input.
