Of the fuel tank, ran out about a 1/2 mile from my exit. After an embarrassing push to the top of the hill, ( and entry to the ramp), I managed to coast to the gas station. I did not get 3.7 gallons into her, only 3.45, to the top! I guess my fuel lite is coming on with about .7 left in the tank after all.

I coasted into the gas station just a couple of days ago. I also only got in 3.46 gls. just to the top of the brim. That was at 38 miles on the fuel trip. Usually if I fill it any higher than the brim it spills out the overflow by the swing arm.

I've found my time "on the light" varies with speed. On the highway I went 48 miles on the light. The second time I ran out, I was riding the dog $h!T out of her and only got 27 mi.

Ditto. The one time I ran out it took just a hair over 3.4 gallons to fill.

Hmm... is it possible that the fuel pump intake is located such that there's always 1/4 gallon in the frame it cannot pick up? The casting might hold 3.7 but you'll only see 3.45 maybe? Even if this is the case, spec'ing the capacity @ 3.7 is somewhat misleading... when my manual says 3.7, I assume that to mean *usable* fuel... not what the tank holds, unless that is one and the same.

I suspected that the tank only held 3.4 gallons. When my light comes on, it takes 2.7 gallons for a fillup.

I agree with the tank being 3.45. Remember, this bike has the Harley Davidson Sportster heritage behind it. Remember the 3.3 peanut tank with the .3 being in your pocket?

Brady,

This happens with cars all the time... I would never expect the claimed volume of the tank to be the available capacity... The two are very rarely the same figure... I guess it's like manufacturer claimed power figures... They always quote the biggest figure they legally can.

Besides, have a look at how wide the bottom of the tank is, wouldn't take a very deep pool to make up your quarter of a gallon, and we all know that you never really wanna suck fuel off the bottom of any tank...
