It's caused by all the mechanics involved with our heads. Pushrods and the like. The reason we hear it more than others is the fact that our engine sits between the frame with a big resonator on top. Not a gas tanks that would help dampen the noise. It's normal. A ping/knock is loud enough to know it ain't right, plus while pinging/knocking, you'd notice a reduction in power. |

Cool... I only get the noises when the motor is hot, and I hit the throttle hard(ish) in 2nd or 3rd or 4th. Its like something (a bunch of small marbles) are rolling around in the block for a split second as the power comes on. I dont think its knocking. I think its motor noise. No loss of power either....JUST ANNOYING SOUNDS!!!!!! What is it????? Jack |

I don't think valvetrain noise would cause a momentary loss in power. Try some octane booster and see if that helps. You might then be able to tell better if it knocking or just noise. |

Jojoo. I must agree with Steveshakeshaft. It sounds like pinging. Glitch, I beg to differ. Pinging or knocking can be (very) loud (experienced that myself on my Sportster), but most of the time its so subtle, inexperienced people don't even hear it. |

OK, I stand corrected. Does that make me experienced? Or just old Have your timing checked. That was my problem, too far advanced. |

Sounds like pinging to me too. Valvetrain noise you can hear just cruising at steady RMP w/o load. Kind of a tapping sound that is magnified by the cooling fins on the cylinder and no real gas tank over the heads to mask it. |

DON'T USE OCTANE BOOSTER IN YOUR BIKES. or so the manual says... |

note for future reference: Valve train noise will occur at half the speed of the crankshaft. I also have a bit valve train noise but mostly when the motor is cold. Though when it warms up the typical clatter is more apparent due to everything else being quieter. If pinging is your problem try another gas station. See what happens. |

Also... not sure what part of the country you are in, but I do know that in certain states, certain times of the year the add a higher concentration of Ethanol to the gasoline mixture. Not sure how this affects the pinging. Anyone else familliar with this?? |
