XB9R, assuming all is well.

What are the effects on handling of

A) Taking on a passenger w/o re-adjusting shock preload?

B) Riding single, but adding a few clicks to the shock preload to lower the suspension? (hypothetical at this point - I don't even know if this would work as asked on an XB).

Curious. Thanks.

A) I think that the front end could get light coming out of a corner. This will make the bike extremely responsive and could cause something like a tank slapper. I would imagine you would be ok if you took it real easy.

B) By adding a few clicks to lower the ride height I assume you mean by turning the adjuster on the rear spring? This would make the problem worse with a second rider and would act somewhat like the second rider would make the bike act from the first question.

Your second question seems a little confusing though. If you add clicks (putting the longer portion of the collar between the spring and the adjustment nubs) then the spring gets stiffer, ride height when you sit on it is higher. If you move the collar to where the nubs are closest to the spring the ride height with you sitting on it will be lower and the ride softer. Too soft in the back can cause problems coming out of corners hard on the gas.

What are you trying to do?

I also assume your starting point was the service manual or owners manual setup.

The rear spring isn't stiff enough for sporty riding with a mature passenger at the back. My wife is not too heavy (like 50kg/110pounds), but on the stiffest setting it's still too soft. Excellent for making 2nd gear wheelies though coming out of curves

m1combat is right: adding clicks makes it stiffer and makes the rear rise a bit.

When the rear is too soft, it will sink in and possibly bottom out when riding hard through curves and hitting a bump.

What are you trying to do?

Nothing. Just want to understand some of the dynamics.

Ahhhh....

Try Marcus McBain's site. There are some good technical explanations there. Be warned - Once you read it, you'll want more.
