have an 03 xb9r belt broke today i have no owners manual or anything. so long story short..how do i replace the belt. harley wants $80 for it (just labor. tryin to get belt from dave). | ||

Well, the bolts that hold on the swingarm brace were pretty tight on my bike and it was a little difficult to loosen the deepest one on the front portion of the swingarm. I ended up putting a rag over the swingarm and using a boxend wrench on the end of the allen wrench for leverage. After that, slip the belt around the rear set. Rotate the belt and place it over the front pulley. Loosen the rear axle and pinch bolt (I generally put a block of wood under the pipe to elevate the rear tire). After about 15 turns out, there will be enough slack to put the belt over the rear pulley. Once it's there, tighten everything you loosened. I am pretty sure that the belt guards need to be removed on an 03. On the '03 models the belts are seemingly quite fragile. Be sure you don't twist it or kink it while installing it. It should last quite a while when installed, but just be careful installing it. | ||

you need to remove the axel before you remove the brace or you will warp the swingarm. torque the arm before you install the axel aswell. the service manual has the procedures and torques that costs less than most simple mistakes. | ||

If his belt was broken to begin with, I don't think he needs to loosen the axle before the swing arm brace as there would be no tension. You are correct though, just in case you may as well follow the procedure though. | ||

tightening the axle flexes the swing arm. if it didn't then you would'nt be able to fit the wheel in. there is probably a note in the manual if you check. | ||

BUY THE SERVICE MANUAL. You NEED it if you're going to do your own work on the bike, period. Proper torque values are extremely important. To get a new belt on - Removal of old belt includes: Remove the chin fairing Remove the front pulley cover Remove all belt guards Loosen rear axle pinch bolt Loosen rear axle 15 turns Remove idler pulley Remove swingarm brace Remove rear wheel Remove belt Installation of new belt includes: Route belt onto front pulley DO NOT BEND OR TWIST THE BELT. DO NOT BEND OR TWIST THE BELT!!! Install rear wheel (apply anti-sieze to threads; grease axle; do not tighten axle yet, leave 15 turns out) Slide belt onto rear pulley Install swingarm brace, tighten to spec Install idler pulley, tighten to spec Install belt guards Tighten axle to spec Tighten pinch bolt to spec Install front pulley cover Install chin fairing The belt guards can be a bit of a pain. Be patient with them, they will come off. The order is (for the most part) important. You cannot do certain things without performing the prerequisites. The order above will work. Torque everything properly. You'll need to lift the rear of the bike. If you have a swingarm stand and plan to use that, you must lay the belt over the right side upright of the stand BEFORE performing any of this work. Otherwise lift the rear in some manner that does not enclose the rear wheel. | ||
