Looking for easily (quickly) removed saddlebags for a 12R. Specifically, I'm interested in the Buell bags: http://www.buell.com/en_us/bikes_gear/accessories/productslist.asp?Menu_ID=4&ID= 1705&MITEM=62. Has anyone actually used these? How easily are they installed removed? Is there any mounting hardware that has to be permanently installed? Or, are there alternatives that you'd recommend? (I basically need something just big enough to transport workout clothes and a laptop.) thanks! WYD | ||

It better be a small laptop if you want to fit in the Buell bags. I'd get the bags for the clothes and put the laptop in a backpack. Dave | ||

Dave, Thanks for the heads up. The laptop may be a moot point - I'll either use a backpack or cage it on those days where I absolutely need my laptop at work. Have you ever stocked those particular Buell bags? If so, what do you think about them? WYD | ||

I've got the bags and love 'em. In fact, I got them from Dave. I just used them on a long weekend trip and was reminded once again that they hold a lot more than I'd think. They look good on my firebolt and match the style well. There's one bracket held on by two screws to mount, and then it's pretty much 10 seconds on/off with the bags. The bracket is small and black so doesn't show up much without the bags in place, but I always pull it off anyway when it isn't needed. The bags seem very well made and haven't given me any problems, even at extended periods of high speed (90 with runs up to 110). The entire side hinges open on a section of material at the bottom, with the zipper extending also into the bottom section. This seems to be the only complaint I've read about these bags (small things may fall out when opening the bags in a vertical/hanging position). I only carry clothing in them so I have had no difficulty. The only drawback I see is that there is no flap over the zippers, so if you ride frequently in the rain that may be a problem. I certainly recommend them after using them for a while! | ||

There's one bracket held on by two screws to mount, How/where does the bracket mount? Does it require any drilling or other body work? thanks! WYD | ||

DaveS Any chance of getting a picture of the installation instructions for the bags? I want saddle bags for my 12S, and if this is something that with a little work can be made to fit a Lightning, I would be VERY interested. Thanks Dave Bruce | ||

Underneath the tail section of the firebolt, above the rear tire, you'll see two torx screws. These are what the bracket mounts to. Easy, huh? The XBR really is one of the few great, and well planned, sport bikes with touring abilities(as opposed to sports-tourers). | ||

Cortech Tourmaster, I have the large set for my XBS tail and put them on Charlieboy's XBR when it was mine. Worked no problem. The tailbag is large enough to fit my laptop (HP PAVILION 5400 for size comparison) and a weekends worth of clothes. The best fit has been when I ran the straps for the saddlebags through the zipper bottom of the tailbag, then zipped that to the strap on the tail of the seat, attached the side straps to the passenger peg brackets. Stays very stable up to 100+. Combined with my infamously tall...ok I am short  ...tankbag and I can carry enough for probably 2 weeks on the road. | ||

I've had good luck with Chase Harper Stealth saddlebags on my R. They strap onto the passenger footpegs and the license plate brackets and the passenger seat locks 'em in place. Their construction looks so nearly identical to the Buell bags, I'll betcha they make them for Buell. | ||

Bruce, I have a limited number of S1 New old stock saddlebags/tail bag that work very well on an S. Amazingly well, like they were built for the bike. $200 for the set. I sell the chase harper stealth bags too, these fit much better on an S because the straps are rear justified on the saddlebags, which keeps them from riding on the turn signals. They are easily attached. They are the first bags I've fit on the S that I'm satisfied with the fit on them. They aren't HUGE, but they're reasonably sized for a few day trip.
