Hi all, It's been a while since I have posted, which I guess is a good thing! Well, now I'm having problems with my 2003 XB9S. I have about 35,000mi on it with only minor issues over its lifetime. The problem that is surfacing is a coughing and sputtering that is very inconsistent. Sometimes it is an issue when I first start the bike, sometimes not. Sometimes it is and issue during acceleration and fully bogs only seeming to run on one cylinder. In all cases it somehow rights itself and runs fine if I manage to get it up to highway speeds for a decent amount of time. I had similar symptoms in the past which was due to a shorting spark plug lead that had worn through. I checked both leads which were fine. It does seem like a spark issue as it is so intermittent but I'm not sure what the source of the issue could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated! | ||

Could be just about anything in the wiring harness, but I would pull the bolts that hold the coil and put them back in to make sure the coil has a good ground. | ||

For the crank angle sensor you will need a cheap oscilloscope to check the pulses. They are too expensive to just shotgun replace. | ||

I'd replace the intake seals as well. Use the newer style blue ones with metal core. Checking the coil and plug wires etc is also a good solution as is the CPS. Those are also easier to get to and check out. As far as the CPS though... Can't you set that via the fuel pump noise or was the suggestion more about it being faulty than being not set right? In any case... Because it seems good when warm I'd say the intake seals are the problem myself. | ||

Same thing happened with mine. Turned out, I had got some stale fuel. Drained the tank and all is good. | ||

03 CPS is only about $70, replacing it is cheap enough. | ||

Can't you bench test these? I know that's how I ruled out mine a while back(it is a newer style one though). I got a 5 volt power supply(cut up a cell phone charger plug, they supply 5 votls) Your gonna apply voltage to the wire of the crank sensor and measure voltage output from the third wire, when you pass a a piece of metal through the sensor you should get a drop (or pickup) I forget. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1XzwZE6n8M | ||

I've thought about that Greg. That part is way overpriced. Dwilson, bench testing would be sketchy because the failures tend to be intermittent. But a $85 portable digital oscilloscope will make it really easy to diagnose this (and many other) possible problems. And by really easy, I mean pop the seat off, bend two paperclips, push them in the back of the ECM connector plug, start the bike, and 5 minutes later you know. Like a 15 minute exercise, most of which is spent figuring out what wire colors you need. Here is a failing CPS  Here is a good CPS  I can dig up the thread if anyone wants it and cant find it. I have a pretty extensive thread that shows what a bad CPS looks like. | ||

EBay has they in piles, might be able to get them fro Jameco or Sparkfun too. | ||

I have been eyeing those little scopes myself. The only real issue I have seen is the low bandwidth. For vehicular and audio stuff, I think it would be completely fine though. I have the same problem with my XB12R and it is the fuel pump. If yours is very noisy then that is an indication that it is on the way out. |
