Okay guys I finally got another XB bike and I'm relatively happy--relatively because there are issues with this bike I wasn't aware of upon purchase.
First thing is the entire end cap of the muffler is missing--I didn't notice this in the pics the gentleman sent me.
By the way, a couple friends drove the 7 hour round trip to pick the bike up for me.
Anyhow, I have a stock Uly muffler I was going to install on it but there's no servo to attach the valve cable to. Weren't all of the 12s equipped with that muffler valve?
Here's a pic where the servo should be.

And one of the muffler.

Any insight is much appreciated.

The servo actually mounts on the top of the airbox, not inside. You should have noticed it as soon as the colored cover was taken off.

As a separate issue, I don't know what that mess is that he plugged the breather holes with, but make damn sure that none of that can come loose and go down the throttle body.

That is one gutted muffler!

Thank you Sifo, you are correct. It's been a while since I had my Uly and my memory certainly isn't what it used to be. : )
The top of the air box is MIA. There's a K&N filter installed and those things in the breather holes are nut assemblies to hold the filter in place. The breather hoses have been re-routed to a box with a drain .

As far as running, it needs a little help too. It's kinda hard to start. It spins over a bunch of times and won't light. then I try a second time and about 2 revolutions it fires. It idles at 1500. I can't tell if it's rich or lean but it runs really cammy and ratty at that point. Not smokey or eye watering. Part throttle and cruise seems way lean as it feels flat and randomly coughs and pops out the exhaust. Heavy throttle and upper mid and top, it pulls hard--or maybe it just feels like it because the mid range sucks. It does have the race ECM.

Thanks for rescuing what sounds like a nice bike from a previous owner with... dubious judgement. : (

Fix the exhaust and get a servo back on there before you chase down runnability problems. No way it will run right with that current exhaust setup.

Thanks Reepicheep.

Yeah, that's what I figured and was attempting to do with the stock muffler.

Well, anyone have an air box cover and servo they'd like to part with? : ) Maybe a cable too as mine is a little slow to return.

Here's the bike.

A mess under the seat.

That gutted muffler was probably a drummer or a copy of it.

Brother-- I was wondering if it may be a Drummer but I couldn't recall if Kevin welded the end cap back on or used screws or pop rivets. Had one on my old '04 12S. Really like the sound of them.

Jesus that thing looks like a mess!

Your belt looks different too, is there a part number written on it?

Well, just bought an air box and exhaust servo off ebay.
Guess I'll get out to the garage and install the old Uly muffler.

Drummer was either welds or rivets, depending on when it was built and which model it was.

Hi Froggy!
Thanks for the pic. Judging by where the pop rivets are in your pic, it looks like my gutted one is a Drummer. The holes in mine line up with what is shown here.
As far as the belt,I'll see if I can get a part number off of it.

On the plus side, I got the Uly muffler installed and set the idle down to 1000 RPM. It starts almost immediately now and sounds nice and quiet. : )

I was contacted by a fellow Bad Webber and he informed me there are two different servos. Well, I think I got lucky and ordered the correct one--the one where the cable bracket is a metal piece. However, I ordered the wrong air box--the one that breathes through the frame.
Will a 2009 Firebolt box work?

I'm having trouble finding the connector that goes to the servo from the wiring harness. Where on the harness does it originate from?

Why is that a problem? ,you can drill or saw some other holes/openings in the airbox!

On my 04 xb 12s there was a triangular connector on the leftside under the battery.

There are three airbox covers for XB12 models, one is for 04/05 models with the hole in the frame, 06 switched to having holes in the cover, then it was changed again in 07 to add more holes. It is not a big deal that you got the wrong cover, a couple minutes with a large drill bit to swiss cheese it and you are good to go.

You can see a few options here - http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/444978.html?1237820427

Just remember that the more you take away, the louder the intake noise will be, if that is a concern of yours.

Brother--I did see a triangle connector where you're talking about but no pigtail coming out of it.

Given what I see under the seat, and the reasonable where/what questions, I advise contacting Al at American Sport Bike for a service manual, if you don't already have one. Excellent piece of kit, as the Brits would say. The electrical diagram and various photos of stuff will prove quite helpful.

from the triangle connector you need another piece of wiring that goes to the servo motor.

Dave--I have every intention of buying a service manual, just gotta make sure I'm going to keep the bike first, and I am. : )

Brother--That's what I figured. The PO must have removed it along with servo and air box cover.

Froggy--About the belt. The only markings I could find on it is a round purple stamping that looks like it says EEEP inside, can't really tell for sure.

Guys, is this the harness I need for the servo?

I contacted the seller and he doesn't know what it's for.

Thanks.

Well, I installed the air box cover (after carving some breather slots in it), the exhaust valve servo and wiring harness. Somethings wrong between the servo and vale control cable--it's way too long. And, the angle of the bracket in relation to the cable trough in the cover is off--2007 servo, 2004 cover. The servo doesn't do anything either. Is it deleted in the race ECM?
Anyhow it still runs exactly the same--like crap. Extremely rich at idle--I'm talking eye watering-- missing and spitting back through the intake at cruise with the throttle barely open.
I think I'm going to talk to Kevin at Drummer and see if he'll sell me an end cap and reinstall the Drummer. Then I'm going to remove the servo and harness I just bought. And then, I'm thinking I need to have a look at the intake seals--thinking they may need to be replaced.
On a positive note, I got rid of the rats nest of wiring under the seat.
Any insight into what I should look into would be greatly appreciated.

Is it deleted in the race ECM?
yes the race ecm's delete the servo.

those servo's do not have a very long life ,so its a good idea to get that drummer back together.

For intake seals ,have a look here,
http://www.5-0dro.com/index.php/buell/lightning/tw in-motorcycles-buell-sportster-intake-flanges-deta il

see here for a how-to, http://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/artikelen.asp?cid=7& aid=452

I also would do a engine and gearbox oil change and refresh the brake fluid.
and have a look if the clutch is adjusted properly.
