Hi there DJ,

Just a note to note that you need the primary cover installed to adjust the primary chain slack. On the bottom lip of the primary cover you should find the tensioner/shoe. One bolt with a lock nut to adjust the tension. Open up the little two-screw cover to check for chain slack, and check it at several places of rotation.

Question: I didn't read the post about your accident that I recall, but if it was severe enough to bend the clutch basket/flywheel, then it should have broke the primary cover as well. Unless I'm not understanding what you mean by "flywheel for the clutch".

DJ, to reiterate what MikeJ just said: without the primary cover installed, the primary chain will have a great deal of slack. Do obtain the factory service manual, you will find a wealth of information there, all of it good. regards, dean

With that level of a crash check your stator assembly for cracks while you have the cover off. Easy to look it over now, hard if it dies while out on a ride.
