When I apply the front brake (with or without the rear applied) and have slowed down to the last several feet before I plant my feet, the brake will grab and loosen a few times in succession. It feels like the wheel is moving back and forth (not side to side) in short bursts. I am applying even pressure all the way to the stopping point. Up to the point that this happens, braking is very smooth. It's only happening at low speed. My first thought was the steering head cap nut tightness, but I thought that was side to side head shake. It could be either a slightly bent rotor or maybe one or more of the rotor mount fasteners is not working like it's supposed to. Or it could be brake pads? I will be checking the steering head cap nut tightness just to rule that out. Anyone have similar issues or any knowledgeable persons able to assist in diagnosing this? Mike. p.s. Not interested in any users posting about this problem being inherent to ZTL brake systems or any other Buell/XB bashing. |

Yeah, you're probably right. I guess I'm fortunate that I haven't got myself into a high speed wobble situation. I'll post when I figure this out. Mike. |

I found that the four pinch bolts on the lower fork clamp were all loose. I loosened the pinch bolts on the upper fork clamp, then tightened the steering stem capnut to spec, then tightened all the pinch bolts to specs. It's too late to ride it tonight but I hope this solves the problem. Mike. |

Too late to ride? It's never too late to ride. Go wake up the neighbors. |

LOL. I'd love to wake the neighbors but I am too sleepy to ride. Mike. |

Oh well in that case better safe than sorry. Rubber side down. |

Update. Properly tightening down the upper and lower fork clamp bolts and the steering head capnut made a huge difference. There is still a slight vibration so I am going to redo the tightening procedure to make sure I did it correctly and check a couple of other things that might be contributing to the problem. Maybe tightening (checking tightness of) the upper and lower triple clamp fasteners needs to be done at 5,000 mi. intervals instead of 10,000 mi. as Buell recommends in the manual.?? Mike. What sort of torque are we putting on the cap nut these days? I put the recommended on mine and it needs doing again 3000km down the track. I also used studlock on mine cause it was loosening easily. Does anyone think there could be a fair bit of wear on hte bearing in the head that is causing the steering to become notchy? |
