2004 XB12R. It has about 20k on it. I have had it since about 500 miles. Over the last three years it has developed an odd intermittent issue, typically on hotter days and more when under load (I climb the same 5 mile uphill on the highway at high altitude every day going home from work). The bike will start missing, stumbling and overall run very poorly on the highway and then when I get off the highway and try to come to a stop it just wants to die on me. If it does die, or if I turn it off when running poorly the fan does not come on even if obviously hot. It will happen some days but most days it rides fine. I took it into Harley last year when the problem stopped being intermintent and the bike just would not run and they replaced the TPS (not adjusted but replaced). Bike has run fine all summer long so far except the same issue developed yesterday on the way home and was still present this morning when I tried to ride the bike again. Any thoughts? | ||

I would probably replace the cylinder head temp sensor. Does the fan work properly when it is running good? | ||

Some diagnostics needed before replacing parts. ECMSpy will show if the temp sensor is working or not. ECMSpy will also show if the fan is working or not. | ||

MMcn49, are you selling ECMSpy by chance? I have debated back and forth on getting a code diagnositic tools since the only issues I have ever had with this bike are elctrical or computer in nature. I don't think it is necessarily the temp sensor in that when I started it up this morning (cold) it still was not running properly and the bike had not had time to heat up to where the engine would start shutting down due to heat. I hate bringing the bike into Harley so I may have to bit the bullet on diagnostic tools myself. | ||

Just looked up ECMSpy. Is there an instruction book for dummies? It looks like you need to be a computer to undrestand what to do. I have no issue working on my bike including electrical repair issues but the computer junk always gets me. Is it easier than it seems? | ||

If you can find ECMSpy to download, the instructions should be part of the download. It's a VERY easy program to use. Even if you haven't used it in a year, it'll come back to you in minutes after turning it on. Mike |
